Both of these pics are being claimed to be from the Hallettsville Airport on FB. I know they're not but can't remember where they're from. Hell, I don't think Hallettsville even has anything remotely resembling an airport.

Nevermind. Alligator, not croc. I retract my observation.

All I can find on the rattlesnake pic is a pinterest page connecting it to the Lometa Rattlesnake Jubilee.

Edit:

Here is an article saying they were found in Florida.

And here's an article that doesn't give a location.

There is also a page mentioned the Hallettsville story and another saying it was a New Braunfels airport.

Kill it with fire, preferably an entire tanker full of gasoline

Those are prairie rattlesnakes and from somewhere where it is actually cold enough for reptiles to need hibernaculums (like Montana or Canada). The only rattlesnakes around Hallettsville would be timbers, but they don't den here.

No idea on the gator, but I don't know of a waterbody big enough to hold a gator like that around Hallettsville.

It may only be one runway and I don't ever recall seeing any planes take off or land but it is there.

That remotely resembles an airport.

It's amazing how those two photos pop up every year. Florida, California, Texas, Wyoming, and Montana have all had a claim on them.

Don't BS me man, that's just one of those "airports" where dudes go to play with their big-ass RC planes, isn't it?

I bet you'll find more diamondbacks in Halletsville than timber rattlers.

Second pic is definitely Nopesville, USA.

Agreed. I'm guessing maybe he was thinking Hallsville, over in East Texas.

Negative. Runway is only about half as long as necessary to land his 757 or the Presidential 747.

No, I meant what I said. Diamondbacks are notably rare or absent from the majority of the Post Oak Savannah/Blackland prairie. You can draw a rough line from Victoria to Gonzales to La Grange, and diamondbacks won't be east (or far) of that line. Unless you guys can show me some proof.

Here's a very good map showing the range of diamondbacks in Texas, if yall are curious.

Interesting. But what is close? Halletsville is maybe 30 miles from Gonzales?

It's a habitat thing. They'll go as far east in that area as they thornscrub goes, which I don't believe is past the eastern part of the Guadalupe.

We have diamondbacks in Brazoria County, have run across them in Matagorda county and Halletsville,is well, within normal range.

Wouldnt say they are the most common snake, but timber rattlers are not as prevalent nearly anywhere outaide of parts of east Texas and diamondbacks are not uncommon at all along the Bayand Gulf Prairie regon.

I've taken off and landed at the Hallettsville airport, so I can confirm it's possible.

12fmane knows his snakes.
Grew up in hallettsville and live here again now. I have never had an encounter with a diamondback but have had 3 separate encounters with timber rattlers.

It doesn't sound right (just looking at a map) but 12fmane is right. Several Timber rattlers are spotted in facilities in Wilcox and Halletsville. Didn't believe it until I saw the pictures.

The biggest rattlesnake I have seen in the wild was in Galveston... ran into plenty south of 35 and particularly in Palacios. Never saw one in between El Campo (59) and Markham (35) despite lots of hunting around there and other snakes spotted.

It's well known that there are lots of diamondbacks along the coast, but from a habitat standpoint that's not remotely where 12fMane is talking about.

I've seen several Timbers, and never in "East" Texas....and I spend a lot of time in East Texas. Just say there are multiple pockets outside of the traditional East Texas area

Well then, I defer to greater knowledge.

How old is a gator that size? And these pics have gotta be 10+ years old. First time I saw them someone mentioned it was from an Exxon jobsite.

Here's a very accurate range map for timbers in Texas, if anyone is interested.

I remember seeing that Alligator photo attributed to the Sugar Land/Missouri city construction site right outside Kitty Hollow park when I was in high school. There was an article in to one of the local newspapers, but I can't find any news source to verify it.

I found this 2002 post about it with the same facts, but some people in comments refute it.

There used to be a gator in Anahuac, big female I believe, that the biologist said was around 12' feet and said she had been around for 60 years in the same little bar ditch.

Availability of food I am sure has a major impact on growth rate but I think it's safe to assume any gator over 10' is probably 30-40 years old.

The on in the picture is probably in the 10-12' range, if I had to guess.
