I need some advice from you guys that are much more knowledgeable than me. I recently, and finally, got my hands on a silencerco omega (check cleared 7/7/16, approved 4/25/17, stamp arrived on 5/2/17 if that info helps any of yall waiting.)
I have a few AR's that I put an ASR flash hider on and use the direct thread mount for a .300 BLK bolt action and .270 Win bolt action.
I would like to be able to put the can on a Tikka T3 Lite chambered in .308 that I have. The problem is there isn't enough material on the end of the barrel to have it threaded with 5/8x24 threads. Silencerco makes a 9/16x24 ASR flash hider and muzzle brake but I don't really want to go that route. That leaves me with chopping the barrel and having it threaded. I've never had it done to any of my rifles but don't see it being a problem for my uses, which are hunting and plinking with some bench rest tossed in, but nothing serious. By and large my shots are under 300 yards but I like being able to shoot out to 500 or 600 yards for fun. I understand that after the chop, the barrel with be stiffer which should increase accuracy, but I am going to lose velocity. My question is, with the T3 having a 24 3/8" barrel, what length do you guys suggest I cut it to? Any ideas on what impact I will I see at 22, 20, 18 or even 16 inches?
If it makes a difference, I typically shoot 168 gr rounds but shoot various loads quite frequently. Also, the omega weighs in at 14oz and is just a hair over 7" long.
TIA for the input fellas.
