Edit: Sorry for the long-winded post but the subject of "pretty guns" gets me revved up about shotguns. I'm off to Illinois Friday to visit family and go pheasant hunting with my brother-in-law. He will be toting his Beretta Silver Pigeon into the field, and I will have my pretty (and inexpensive) Turkish made SxS. Or perhaps my Spanish made 16 gauge XXV.

Don't you DARE apologize for talking fine double guns.

Lots of different guns to me fall in the "prettiest gun" cagegory.

Lever rifles - not going to lie, the 1873 is my favorite lever rifle. And the modern Uberti rifles with the full octagon 24" barrels, color case hardened receivers and good wood on them are just beautiful guns.

Single Shot - Sharps 1874, and it's not even close. 30" octagonal barrel, color case hardened receiver, blued finish.

Bolt Action - a good Winchester 70, with a deep blue finish and good wood is artwork to me.

Shotgun - SxS - I love the looks of a good side by side shotgun, especially with damascus barrels. My preference on them is to have exposed hammers though - just something about the exposed hammers that really sets off the look of a good side by side. Pretty wood is obviously a must

[img]http://www.hammerguns.co.uk/images/5207a3f3e4cf6Woodward%20[1600x1200].JPG[/img]

Shotgun - O/U - I like elegance with simplicity, which is why I honestly love the look of the Red Label above most others. The simple satin finish on the receiver with just a hint of scrollwork, nice blued finish on the barrels and pretty wood is just hard to beat for me.

Revolvers (DA) - S&W Model 29 with the old school deep blue that turned the gun into artwork is hard to beat for me.

Revolvers (SA) - Colt Peacemaker, case hardened receiver, 4-5/8" barrel with upgraded, but simple, rosewood grips is absolutely gorgeous

Revolvers (percussion) - Colt 1851 Navy is about the definition of a classic 19th century firearm, and the forefather of most everything modern to boot. (edited)

Pistol (semi auto) - 1911, deep blue finish, minimal roll marks, no front serrations, no rail, blade sights, full size or commander slide and a classic set of rosewood or really nice pecan grips and I'm in love.

I also love a high quality percussion or flintlock rifle as well - just so much craftsmanship and wood on them that when done right, they are a thing of beauty.

Ugliest - most any modern military firearm, including AR's, AK, all bullpup designs, the overwhelming majority of modern semi auto pistols, anything "tactical", most big bore Marlin and Henry lever actions, hi-point anything, glock anything, most things ceracoated or hydro dipped or otherwise painted, most nickel or stainless finish guns (personal preference, I don't like them). Most things in this category are beautifully functional, but flat ugly.

Not to nitpick, but that's an 1851 Navy Colt, not 1836. The 1836 Colt would be a Patterson.

Doh! Meant 1851, but for some reason the Patterson jumped into my brain. Not sure how that happened to be honest. Patterson's are just a little too spartan and primitive. The 1851 is the frame that most everything ended up being born off of.

Good catch.

My nomination for one of the ugliest guns, the Kriss Vector. I just can't like it no matter how hard I try.

Take off the long barrel and turn it into an SBR and it's awesome.

The 1851 was .36 caliber - maybe that's what popped into your head. Happens to me all the time.

The 1858 New Army wasn't a Colt. It was a Remington. The only stainless ones are reproductions.

The Ruger Old Army, now out of production, was similar in appearance and was available in stainless, but it wasn't a Colt either.

Like Irish said above, Purdey builds some purty guns. Been to their store in London...it is a sight to behold. Bespoke firearms of that quality are a treat to gaze upon and handle.

Ugly? Hi-Point C9 pistol. Looks the same as the Marksman bb gun built to look like a .45acp. Looks cheap, feels cheap, is cheap.
Any of the English "Best" shotguns and double rifles - Purdey, Westley Richards, Holland & Holland - are top of the line "purty" and hard to beat in the category of "prettiest" guns. So are the price tags, unfortunately, and that puts them out of my reach. I'm curious if anyone who posts here owns and shoots one.

Equally as pretty, but not as expensive, are some of the other European shotguns, especially SxS guns. Fausti in particular makes some spectacular guns at about 1/3 to 1/2 the price of the English Best guns, and are easily the equivalent of any Beretta break-open shotgun. Fausti used to be a shop that cranked out price-point guns for export as well as fine shotguns and double rifles. When Stephano Fausti passed away and his three daughters took over the company, they changed the focus of the company to high quality guns. Even their basic SxS - the Fausti DEA - is a fine looking and handling gun, having elegant lines, despite being rather plain in appearance. Fausti shotguns start around $2000 (O/U) and $3500 (SxS) and go up to around $35k. Fausti makes the new Parallelo for Beretta, starting around $5000.

I'm a SxS guy for most shotgun applications, and a Fausti is on my list of shotguns to own. I'm currently mostly shooting Spanish and Turkish made SxSs, although I do occasionally break out a 28 gauge Ruger Red Label or a 20 gauge Browning Superposed. I will never own one of those 99% engraved double guns with AAAAA grade wood because I won't own a gun that I don't want to shoot, But I still like to own and shoot nice looking guns.

For rifles, any sleek bolt action rifle with attractive wood and blued metal floats my boat, and I like most lever guns.

I'm not much of a handgun shooter - my preference there runs to revolvers. I really like the lines of the Colt 1860 Army and 1861 Navy, a fine set of flintlock dueling pistols, and Colt 1911s.

A guy at the local skeet range here has a Purdey and it's a really nice looking gun. I shot it once but was nervous I'd drop it and have to get a second loan on our house.

I've always thought that Ruger #1 is a dang pretty rifle:

Apparently I'm in the minority here, but I prefer stainless to blued.

As far as "pretty shapes," shotguns I like sxs or o/u, for rifles I like lever action, and for pistols I like 1911s and revolvers.

Some very pretty guns in this thread. I have to add the JJFU damascus 1911 to the mix:
