How long do you want to ignore this user?
I am an Asst. Scoutmaster and we've decided to take our older boys to Northern Tier in the summer of 2018. For various reasons we are going to use a private outfitter instead of going through BSA. I actually did a Boundary Waters trip back in 1980 with my troop, so I am familiar with it, but obviously it's been 35+ years!

I would love any recommendations as far as routes, outfitters, timing (when is our best chance at avoiding mosquitoes and black flies?), and any other sage advice the OB has to offer.

TIA!

Great decision to go to the Northern Tier.

I remember 2 lakes vividly that I would give a lot to return to. Let me try and hunt down their names from some resources...

1. KEVLAR - If your boys can respect their gear (and since you are taking them to a High Adventure base, I will assume that they can) spend the extra money on the Kevlar canoe rentals. It might be $50-100 more per scout, but holy cow they are soooooo much lighter for portages and they are incredibly solid in the water.

Weight differences (approx)

Aluminum 17' weight - 88 lbs!
Fiberglass: 18' - 65 lbs...

Kevlar: 16' - 44lbs!!!!!

2. START CANOEING YESTERDAY!

Being stronger and better canoe-ers will only make the experience more fun. If Scouts have to hike 6 months to a year before Philmont, why wouldn't they canoe and swim before Northern Tier?

3. Gear shakedowns

When is our best chance at avoiding mosquitoes and black flies?

There normally aren't any from mid November to mid April, but it is also hard to canoe on frozen water.
If the water is open you will probably have mosquitos & black flies.
Use a lot of Deet!
Good luck!

I went as a scrawny 14 year old & had a great time. Have one change of wet clothes & one change of dry clothes. You seriously don't need hardly any spare clothes........definitely have a light jacket for the evenings. One of our last days we passed a group of guys on their first day & no joke several of them had Redwings & Wranglers on, how freaking miserable & what a great way to drown. Our first day on the lake the duffer passed the time killing black flies with a spare map. After the first day we didn't have any black flies. I think we went in July. The weather is typically a nice enough temperature that the mosquitoes aren't absolutely terrible. I've seen much larger mosquitoes in South Texas. If you have any kids that aren't into fishing, bring gear for them to fish because the first Northern Pike they land will put a smile on their face. Those fish are FUN to fight. I recommend a steel/kevlar (whatever) leader on your line. Plan on old tennis shoes with no socks for your wet shoes, you can also go the jungle boot route for added ankle support.

To add a little to the thread...I see this advice from this helpful page. I think we'll plan to go in early June!

Quote:

I prefer an early trip, right after Memorial Day. Bugs are fewer though still highly prevalent but most times no gnats or biting black flies. It can be cooler, sometimes snow if we have a late winter and ice-out but my experience has been 60 degree days. And oh yeah, it's less crowded with people and the fishing is better.

My troop is taking 15 people (2 crews) to Bissett in late June/early July. I'm currently mired in airline group travel planning. Will post an update after we're back if anyone is interested.

My oldest son, being a glutton for punishment, is also going to NAYLE at Ely less than a week after we get back.

I second the kevlar recommendation. If you go late July, early August, the mosquitoes have burned out some and aren't as bad. We went this past July and the only time the mosquitoes were bad were at dusk until 8:30-9:00 pm (while cooking dinner). After that, they literally disappeared, every night. I believe it was the 50-60 degree temps that drive them back down and we would spend the later evenings looking at the Northern Lights, satellites, and stars.

***DO THIS*** 2-3 days before you go, saturate and let dry your clothes in the product below. It's less toxic on your skin and we all agreed that it was more effective than DEET:

Bring a hand net to land fish. Pike have monster teeth. Also, watch some youtube videos on how to clean them. You'll want to tie on a mono leader to braided line using the crazy alberto knot.

The largest fish were caught trolling various colors of rattle traps behind the canoe. I caught several small mouth bass that were 3-4 lbs but fought like a 7-8 lb bass. Had some good luck throwing topwater - torpedos, frogs, and other freshwater topwater lures. Also broken-back floating crank baits worked really well.

One thing I wish I would have done was bring a small scuba mask to swim around with. The water was incredibly clear.

Finally, you're making a good decision to use a private outfitter. Although we enjoyed the BSA trip, there are a ton of dumb rules that are ignored by some of the guides but strickly enforced by others. Luckily, we had a chilled guide.

Also, can you provide your reasons for a private outfitter? They seem to be cheaper and we're probably going to go that route the next time we go. Just want to understand the benefits.
