Any DFW folks hunting Lake Lavon? I picked up a permit this afternoon (free). The Corps employee helping me gave some pointers on hog, squirrel, and duck hunting the Corps property.

Anybody hunting this and having success? Anybody wanna go for a walk?

Is it still archery only for hogs? I looked into the permit about 10 years ago but wasn't interested in archery.

Smooth bore shotguns with slugs only (no buckshot) north of 380 is legal for hogs. Archery (any legal archery means) is legal in all the hunting areas.

Looks like I need to get a permit too. Did you ask about CHL while hunting, or have to leave it in the car?

I think Corps property nationally is a zero handgun space. I knew handguns were illegal from reading the regs but the staff explicitly reminded me of that fact.

I walked around out there with my bow one day. Lots of pig tracks. Then I went home.

There was a sizable dead hog on 380 just west of the bridge between Princeton and Farmersville about 6 months ago. They're definitely out there.

Hell there was probably an 80 pounder on 380 near Custer that got hit the other day.

Oh where to start...I guess 2003 after I turned 16 then bought my jeep, after I figured out the truck I was to share with my sister was really just hers. I'd had been out to Lavon one time before that with an uncle.

From there on I started hunting Lavon exclusively for ducks. Then progressed to dove and pigs. Never really hunted the pigs, just took a shotgun when scouting before duck season or before a duck hunt. I'm pretty sure at some point I've been within a 10 ft radius of any spot north of 380. You could just about say the same for the Bratonia "fork" of Lavon

In all of my travels and many hours of time spent on the ground I ran into more hunters than pigs. On 2 occasions I had pigs cone though the decoys while duck hunting. The deer on the other hand could put a well managed central Texas lease to shame, size wise. Also saw deer 10 to 1 pigs. If they ever open a deer season, I'll be 1st in line for my permit.

Scariest experience was rounding the corner to 2 hog dogs coming straight at me. Running dogs out there isn't allowed (at some point they had special permits that were lotteried off and special provisions were allowed) but this was before that. The owners acted like nothing was wrong and I didn't push it as both had guns not permitted to be out there.

Well I take that back, a guy pulled into the parking area at 8:30!AM, after a quick successful duck hunt, with a Budweiser and a pistol. Parked his truck running at the entrance essentially blocking the exit and only road out. He said he was there to "bust some caps"! A female steps out and he becomes angry and yells "b***h, get back in the truck before I have to handle you." This continued for a stressful 10+ minutes.

We had plenty of great duck hunts out there until duck dynasty. Even killed multiple bands. I hunted Lavon twice last year an not at all this year. This is a lake I cut my teeth on so to speak, with public dove and duck with great success. Now it doesn't even cross my mind as an option.

I believe you can kill a pig out there but don't expect to have success early or often. If you duck hunt expect to feel the public hunt pains. If your looking for a great nature walk well their might not be a better spot.

Good luck !

My uncle guides on pretty much every public lake in North East Texas and has all but given up on lavon. He's getting that way about Cooper and others as well and is starting to move to private only. He puts the blame on duck dynasty as well. It's created a bunch of people that want to shoot ducks, but don't care to follow etiquette or put in the work.

To duck hunt Lavon nowadays you have to have a boat, most walk in spots are hunted every day.

I just moved to the area (5 mins south of Lavon). I've gone out a couple of times trying to scout but haven't even found a spot to get to open water by walking in. Where are these "over hunted" spots? I hunted Ray Roberts for years and although I would walk in a good ways, we usually had good hunts there. Which makes me think that there's got to be some areas that if you're willing to make the walk would pay off at Lavon.

So....Is Lake Lavon still an overcrowded public duck hunting spot? I've moved not far from the lake, would most likely try to hunt the north west section If I gave it a try. Never hunted it before, but I've got two boys getting close to the age to be able to go duck hunt, looking for something as an option to take them that's no too far...

Yes it's still a mess of a duck hunting spot on the weekends. It doesn't mean you can't have success but just be prepared to scout get up early and have some patients. Though middle of the week in January can be good. Everyone has burnt up their vacation time and are back focused on a strong start to the new year at the job.

(Wylie, Texas September 22, 2018) The North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) has experienced sanitary sewer overflows and unauthorized discharges of wastewater from the Wilson Creek and the Rowlett Creek Regional Wastewater Treatment Plants (RWWTP). These overflows were primarily caused by inflow and infiltration of stormwater into the wastewater collection system. The overflows occurred as follows:

The Wilson Creek WWTP located at 3020 Orr Road, Allen, Texas:
o From approximately 11:00 p.m. on September 21, 2018 to 9:30 a.m. on September 22, 2018 a volume of approximately 1,700,000 gallons was discharged from the head of the plant.
o Beginning at approximately 11:30 p.m. on September 21, 2018, a volume in excess of 2,000,000 gallons of partially treated wastewater was discharged from various plant locations. Estimated volume is as of 2:30 p.m. on September 22, 2018.
o Beginning at approximately 2:30 a.m. on September 22, 2018 a volume in excess of 100,000 gallons was discharged from a manhole upstream of the plant. The overflow is ongoing and is expected to stop as the flood waters recede.
o These flows traveled through the storm water system approximately 2,600 feet to Lavon Lake.
