Yes, small. Toy like. I personally wouldn't buy my 12 year old one as he is probably already too big for it..

Yes, that would be too small. They've already outgrown it.

As previously said, I'd suggest the Marlin Model 60 or something like that with a wood stock from a pawn shop. My wife has an old Winchester with the 5 round magazine that is a little larger.

The Rascal has an 11.5" LOP. Go to Academy Sports and look at it before you buy it. Its small. It's size is precisely why I purchased it. A 12 year old may too big for it. Once you see it you will know.

Here....I took a pic against the 10/22 and Model 60 so you can get an idea. Hope it helps.

Still hard to get an idea of how small the rascal is unless you see it in person.

EDIT: Pic in Post below!

IMO Start them with a BB/Pellet gun. That is probably how must of us learned. Then I used one of my dad's 22s for years until getting my own.

Not sure your living situation (W had an acre.) but after training with my Daisy for a while with my dad he could trust me to use it on my own then his Benjamin when I was strong enough to pump it. Granted I was younger than your boys when I stared. I like the idea of starting kids with something that can do little harm to people or property for the basics.

Also what will the rifle be used for?

We live in the suburbs on a lot that is small enough that the BB gun won't be real usable. I learned on a Daisy myself (40 years ago) but that isn't a good option here.

The rifles will be used to go to the local shooting range and shoot targets. Basically, introductory training/fun for the boys so they can learn to shoot.

That is what though. My kids will be in the same boat. I don't think the golf course would care too much for target practice on the course.
Have you ruled out purchasing one "for" your older son and teaching them both with it? Then maybe the youngest gets one next year. Just a thought to ease the budget. My Old Man pulled that all the time. (If this is a terrible idea, I am sorry just trying to be helpful.)

My 8 year old claimed my 10/22 lol. I've had it since I was a kid (I'm 41). I purchased the marlin 60 as a replacement and like it

Depending on their size, look at the Savage Rascal

I have my dad's model 60. I think he or my uncle has my grandpa's model 60. I am probably going to get a 10/22 though. I love shooting that 60 but i hate loading it.
