My 9 yo is very interested in art (pencil drawings). He has asked for a pencil sketch/print of a whitetail buck for Christmas. We have a couple of prints from Charles Beckendorf, but I was wondering who else is out there in the world of wildlife sketch art (at a reasonable cost).

I have two John Cowan prints hanging in my office. They remind me of good times with my dad. Cowan has a way of capturing the moment.

There are apps out there that will turn your pics into all different types of art. If you have a pic that you have taken of a buck and you convert it to a sketch then have it printed that might mean even more to him.

I like Cory James, his waterfowl sketches are pretty good. Lots of graphite drawings

I have art from Wade Butler, John Cowan, and John Dearman in my office. Each artist has a distinct style but all are excellent at capturing Texas wildlife.

Those are great.

His graphites are very unique.

More watercolors than sketches...however, you might look at Sam Caldwell. Texas State Artist, DU Artist and other accolades.

Calvin Carter with Carter's Creations is my favorite outdoor/wildlife artist. Wayne Baize and G. Harvey for Western prints. I just find it hard to pay $1,500-2,000 for a print my mom and dad got for $150, for anything G. Harvey.

Tell you what. I'll draw your son a pic of a deer and then you buy him a rifle to go kill one with

Great thread. Those Cory James graphites are baller. Would be sweet to have 3 or 4 framed up and hung together. Looks like only 2 of them are able to be purchased as prints on jos website.

He already has access to plenty of guns and several notches in his dove and deer belts. (Shot a buck Saturday) Just because he loves drawing doesn't mean we're raising an entitled liberal.

A buddy of mine from High School recently went full-time as an artist and mainly does outdoor/wildlife drawings. He also does commission work and can pretty much do anything. In the small amount of time he has been a full-time artist, he has already put out some great stuff and has improved as an artist by learning and experimenting with multiple new techniques. I look forward to the artwork he will be putting out in the future.

He is most active on Instagram.

Wow... proud moment. I clicked on the thread to mention my father, but it looks like someone beat me to the punch. The linked gallery is stale and the images are low-res, so here are a few more. Most of his sales are commissioned pieces, but I'm sure there is a deer print somewhere in his inventory.

He also has a number of A&M pieces (including prints of Reveille) and does a lot of work for the U.S. military.

Just to show off his work a little, this is my father in law's hobby.

He takes a piece of black board with a white interior and uses an X-acto knife to cut the black top layer off to make an image. He usually starts with a picture he has taken, often at the zoo.

In progress:

So he shot Hamarbe's cousin.

Then started to transfer the photo onto his scratchboard.

Each individual line is a little cut.

Done.

He copied the body from one photo and the head from another on this.

In progress.

Some others.

Not too bad for a worn down old Teamster.

Loving these works of art. I'm an artist, that is married to a native Texan. I'm at the beginning of adding wildlife into my paintings, so right now it's my landscapes that are of Texas and I travel. I enjoy painting The Natchez Trace, too. A member of OPA, and PSA, and others. Although I do pull artist original hand pulled prints, like etchings and such from copper plates, I mainly work in paints and pigments currently.

If any land owners have a pretty area they want a painting, of, I am available to travel, although I am booked on travel for this Summer doing Corpus Christi, this month, and taking a month to continue my area of North Texas, and then it's a cross country trip for 4th Quarter, as I grew up not in Texas, but in the East. Headed to DC, Northern Va, and MD via Natchez Trace and Nashville, with a week in TN on a 1200 acre place to paint there.
I'm taking reservations for 2025, if you have land you want an original painting of, then let me know via text, so we honor the on-line spirit of the forum. Just mention this Forum, so I know which group you are a part of for my pricing. I give 10% to parks if it comes from a Texas forum, and is ag land. I also am listed as a paint the parks artist for Texas, which is a Nationwide program.
