Alright! I get to start my own 'how to get rid of bees/wasps/hornets' thread!

Just bought a new house and the seller left me their outdoor furniture which includes an outdoor table with a large umbrella. The seller said that he was going to throw away the umbrella but I stopped him to say that I'd like it to stay. He replied with "well there's a large 'hornets' nest (let's say wasp) up inside the umbrella and I don't know how to get rid of them without getting stung". I told him to just leave it and let me worry about it.. not a good choice in retrospect.

He also said that the umbrella has some sort of spring broken in the crank that opens up the umbrella so you have to open it by taking the bottom piece up the umbrella shaft to it's top locking position by hand..... throws in a wrench there.

What's my plan of attack? I've got not knowledge of the size of this nest but have seen them entering and leaving the bottom of the umbrella.. so enough activity to know that it's pretty good size.

Burn the umbrella? Over-sized garbage bag over the top of it to seal the wasps inside? What say you outdoor board?

Get a car washing wand. The kind that has a soap reservoir and will mix the soap with the water. Use Dawn dish soap. Start spraying the umbrella and hit any *******s that fly out.

And whatever you do, make sure it is a cool morning/day.

Light a fire and throw the umbrella on top. Either way, record and post.

And make sure someone is videoing at the time!!!

this seems like the easiest scenario to kill them SOBs with FIREEEEEE


record and post though should you get stung or burn the whole house down.

Just wait them out. We should get a good hard freeze in the next couple weeks.

To be really safe, wait until after the first freeze in about a month. Start early before temp rises. Soap and water in a garden sprayer will do the trick.

I was going to post this.... except for the freeze part haha.

If you have a way to do it, you could also tip the umbrella over and the wasps will eventually leave.

Thats why i'm laughing. The only hard freeze that happens down here is when you eat your ice cream too fast

Wait until dark, when the hornets have calmed down. Put an old sheet over the umbrella, gas them with hornet spray and tie off the bottom of the sheet. I've done this several times and it's worked pretty well.

And if they film it vertical throw them in the fire as well.

Throw a large tarp over the entire umbrella and table (20x20) then toss in a bug bomb and skedaddle.

I still like the fire idea.

If the bottom is the only escape route, you could saran wrap it shut. ... or seal it off with duct tape.

Consider it a dangerous game hunt with your Bug-A-Salt 2.0. Or just wait until after dark and then just knock it down. Everyone knows they can't sting at night.

This is the first thought I had. But what about securing a few bug bombs to some large binder clips with rubber bands. After dark, clip binder clip to edge of umbrella fabric and set off. Repeat if needed.

Do report back and let us know who had the best or possibly worst idea....

I have absolutely nothing to suggest. But I have added this thread to my watch list.

Dr. Lepori had some old flame cultivation torches out on west campus. Think of very large pear burners. They pull propane from the liquid side of a propane tank for forklifts. Go find one of those and go to town...

Big bombs at the base of it on a calm night

Set a water based fogged underneath the umbrella, set it off, and move out of area in a bit f a hurry.

Tater ... what happened?

Leave it on the front porch and see if someone steals it.

Welp.. really rather disappointing.

Just waiting until the evening when everyone was back at the nest and coated the umbrella with the basic wasp killer you get anywhere. Saw about 8 of them fall out of the bottom and dead on to the table. Checked the next morning and all was clear.

Sorry guys, next time I'll be more reckless

Torch the umbrella. I mean, you sprayed it down, but can you REALLY be sure that you got them all?
