Skunk Hit

Let me tell you a story.

So, it is 5 am when my wife awakes me with the statement that there is a skunk in the backyard that just tagged the lab.

Not sure what to do, I grab a flashlight and procced to move very slowly into my back yard and around the house. There is no sign of any skunk although I did find a few landmines from the dog in my bare feet. Awesome.

Luckily, my wife decided to bring the skunk sprayed dog in the house to protect it from the skunk.

So, TLDR, my dog and my house now smell like skunk and my wife is mad because I dared to ask why she brought in the dog.

She washes the dog in hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and dishwashing liquid. Then, she washes him with dog shampoo.

I google as quickly as I can and leave little bowls of vinegar out to address the smell inside the house.

We have to leave to go to work so we can't leave the windows and doors open all day to ventilate.

Any other ideas to address the house smell?

Thanks

If the dog/skunk spray touched any surfaces in the house, the smell will linger there for a while. You can apply the same peroxide/baking soda mix to those spots (make sure that it doesn't damage the surface).

For airborne odors, I don't have any ideas.

My wife claims that the dog never touched the furniture and we have tile floors. So, I am hopeful that most of the odor is airborne.

Did I mention that she took the dog through the entire house to bath him in my kids' bath tub? No garden hose for our dog.

Based on my past experience you're going to be dealing with this for quite a while. Even worse, once you think you've gotten rid of it you're going to get a renewed whiff when things get wet. Whether it's the dog, or the couch, etc. when it gets wet it'll come back (albeit not as strong).

The baking soda/peroxide/liquid detergent is absolutely the right thing to do. Bathe the dog 1-2x per day for a few days. Hit all the floors where the dog walked as well. Do the same thing to the bathtub.

I have personally been sprayed 3x and each of the dogs at least once. It's not pleasant. If you got it on your clothes just throw that shizz away.

Best idea I have is burn the house down or move.

This happened when I was younger. My dad heard our dog yelp, opened the backdoor, smelled that terrible smell, & let the dumb dog in the house. We had a big, 2 story house & I was upstairs in my room. I thought I was going to die. It smelled awful, terrible, like death farts.

Our house, clothes, furniture smelled for months. The smell just lingered.

Good luck. We still make fun of my dad for this.

No worries, eventually you won't notice it....but visitors will.

Go ahead and buy stock in Ozium.

This happened to my boxer several years ago. He literally had skunk breath for about a month. It went away eventually. I guess he finally licked his butt enough to mask the skunk smell.

Rent one of these machines, PRONTO: http://www.ozonesolutions.com/locations/Ozone-Generator-Rental-Dallas-Fort-Worth-Arlington

We use them for our rent houses. They'll take away any chemically active smell from dog pee to dead rat to maryjane to gasoline. Just need to leave it running for a couple of days with the house unoccupied.

We had a cocker that was dumb, well, as a cocker and he got sprayed at least 4 times in his life.
The first time we didn't realize it until he came running in from the back yard. He pretty well ran all around the house like bat **** crazy. We learned after the second time when we smelled skunk and my wife "hurried up to let him in before he got sprayed again". Of course it was too late. Other times we isolated him outside and he was an outside dog for about a week between the repetitive baths.

Costco/Sams, 55 gallon drums of H2O2, dawn, and 100 lb sack of baking soda. Like Sean said, wash, let dry, get ready to do it again for quite a while depending on size of hit he took. Also, get used to that burning tire smell, it will be with you for some time. We tried everything inside the house to get the smell to go away. Not much helped to any degree.

The only good thing was that butthole hated baths and water so it was good to "punish" him by repeated baths.

Our blue heeler got sprayed then ran thru the dog door into the house in the middle of the night.

Our house smelled for months.

Natures Miracle skunk smell remover. You can bath the dog in it and wash areas in the house or clothes with it. When our lab got hit by one it worked a lot better than the peroxide mixture.

All of this. Keep bathing.

set a few bowls of vinegar around (it will help a bit)

spray Ozium. It has killed any smell I have ever encountered. (be sure to open doors/windows if you plan to stay in the house right after spraying- personally, I would just leave for 30 minutes or so)

Thanks for the tips. The vinegar bowls are already out. I just placed an order for the rental machine.

Oh, we are hosting a sleepover on Friday for my son's birthday. FML.

Thanks for the tips.

What are your thoughts on buying vs renting the machine. I bought an old farm house that sat vacant and it smells a bit musty at times. Airing it out helped some but the kitchen especially still has an odor.

If I rent if for 7 days in basically over half way to purchase and I wouldn't mind having one around if it works in case the dog finds a skunk or if another raccoon decides to die in the fireplace..

Good idea for eliminating those nasty sleepover birthday parties!

4 rentals x 3 days per rental = you could have bought one. Most landlords I know that own more than 10 houses own their ozonation machine.

Just an FYI: Follow manufacturer's instructions. Some of them say you can stay in the house while it's on, others you have to leave.

Agreed. I've had good luck with an ozone air purifier similar to this one:

wow...

Skunk Away is a great product for helping dogs in this situation. Hopefully armed with that in the future, terds on your feet will be your worst problem.

For what you are dealing with now, definitely get the ozone machine in there.

Sorry man, that's a rough night.
God's Peace,

Buy the biggest bag of fresh ground coffee you can find and put a big bowl in each room.

If it wasn't me, I would be laughing too.

We have Ozium spray, Ozium gel, vinegar bowls, R86 bowls next to them. Ozone machine arrives tomorrow.

In good news, I might have convinced my wife that we can't have guests sleepover with that smell. So, small victory.

Now, I will have to spend money on a different birthday party.

We used an ozone machine when I ran a hotel front desk during college. They are legit. But I would most definitely recommend the premises be unoccupied while its in use.

My dog Whiskey has been sprayed so many times that I almost think he must like it.

He's getting old now and doesn't get around as much so it seems like he is avoiding the skunks more and more.

Personally, I prefer him being sprayed by a skunk over him battling porcupines yet again. His porcupine encounters is well into the double digits. If I had to guess a number, I'd say 20.

I told the vet once that now that Whiskey had denuded every porcupine in 10 miles, he'd be seeing a lotl less of him in the future.

On the rare times that we want to give Whiskey a bath, we fill up a small stock tank. As soon as he sees us filling that stock tank, he starts avoiding us because he knows what it's for.
