That young man is awesome. With all the crap going on in this country during this election year this helps restore my faith a little.

People are giving this guy a hard time on FB because he didn't put his hand over his heart.

Doesn't military stand at attention instead?

Anyways, for him to stop and do that was amazing.

Did you see Bolt stop his interview when he heard OUR national anthem? Told the reporter to stop and turned and showed respect to another countries anthem.

I just learned about hand over heart this Olympics. It was something added in 2008.

Unrelated to military question, but I found it interesting.

What was added in 2008?

Hand over heart has been in the Flag Code for a long time - since the 50s IIRC. I know it, along with stand/uncover, were taught while I was growing up in small town Texas.

That army reservist is a real class act/hero. I love it and that even though he is on the worlds greatest stage for athletics, he still shows respect, love, and honor. That really is a breath of fresh air in these tumultuouss times.

Always thought bolt was a great runner, but didn't really know his demeanor, but when I saw him do that, he sold me. Class act. And the interview with his mom afterwards when she said its time to hang up the game and get married

The faux outrage over if someone puts their hand over their heart or not pisses me off. I want to punch the complainers in their face.

Standing at attention is common for military in civvies because it is what we do when we are in formation or uncovered. So by nature, I just stand at attention in civvies instead of saluting (authorized but silly) or putting my hand over heart.

I noticed it in the Correction portion at end of this article. Original said it wasn't in the code, but corrected to say was added in 2008.

Agrams. You got any spare pieces you've made that you can inlay Olympic Rings or US Army coin? With the OB's help, I'm sure we can locate him and even get this funded so you are not out $. He should know the Aggies of the OB appreciate him and his service.

That article is wrong. Code was amended in 2008 to "allow" service members out of uniform and veterans to salute. Hand over heart has been in the code since at least 1976.

Either way, props for what he did. I doubt most athletes would do the same. We see it every week during football season at NFL and college games.

My garage is a mess of semi-finished projects, though I am pretty certain a humidor or cigar tray wouldn't do much use to this guy. I am more than willing to do something, though would leave it up to the OB to think about options. A keepsake box with a rio olympics medallion on the top and Army Reserve medallion would be a simple idea.

On a side note, he went to Ole Miss and got bronze in pole vault, even more good bull so something showing some Aggie apprecation would probably be pretty well received.

Let's do this. If you can find a Rio Olympic
Medallion, that would be awesome in a keepsake box. I'll start trying to find a home address, but I'm sure our PI friends can run it down faster. Do you have a paypal link for donations?

If he got bronze, he'll need a display case.

the same people complaining about hand over heart are the same that defended some jackass about 8 years ago for not putting his hand over his.

I am a civilian and was a an AFB for a function when Taps was played on the base. All airman and officers immediately stood in the direction of the flagpole (far off) while the bugle sounded (very faint).

this guy behaved the same way. True love for his country.

Usain Bolt stopped mid interview to respect the US national anthem, i hated the guy for being so damn fast he makes everyone else look silly but now he seems like a pretty good dude to me.

If we want to do something, you can send an email or paypal to gramswoodworks@gmail.com. I can then make an email list and update on cost, whatever project is decided and what the total is. Anything above whatever the total is I can donate to the 12th man foundation or some other agreed-upon charity.

I want to thank all those who donated to Agrams to help fund something for 2Lt Sam Kendricks on his Olympics Bronze medal, but more importantly for showing the rest of the world what it means to be a true American hero/role model.

I believe nearly $100 has been raised, but to do this justice we could use another $100-$150

If you would please consider donating somethings to Agrams PayPal, I know he will personally go out of his way to make something the OB would proudly present to Sam.

We are ~$250. Any ideas/pics/input you guys can post help and we can come to a general consensus.

If we are looking for something Olympic themed, searching for medallions or challenge coins on ebay is a good source, same for if we want an army reserve medallion (or both) like this:

I can inlay whatever we want in terms of a medallion, or I could even do a simple olympic ring inlay from contrasting woods. I do have a local trophy shop that can do laser engraving if we want to do something along those lines. I thought about getting some wood of the state tree of Mississippi (magnolia), but as a wood it is rather unimpressive and plain, so that kind of rules that out. I can do most any kind of veneer on a box or display case, or we could just stick with being Texan and using mesquite as the base wood. Ill let the thread cook for a week and you guys throw ideas around, then see what the most popular idea is and come up with a plan. Hopefully by then Fido96 will have a mailing address/contact without getting a restraining order against himself.

Sam has a pretty good website. I'm sure some of the better OB sleuths can track down either his coach (his father) or him directly.
