What factory .223 round does the Great OB recommend for whitetail deer? I need to dial in my Larue barrelled upper and plan to use it this year to harvest some Grimes County does.

A premium bullet would be your best bet. Something from Barnes. Not that a cup-in-core bullet won't do the job, I just like the insurance of a premium pill when using the 223.

Barnes Vortex ammo with their 62 grain TTSX, or Black Hills or Remington ammo with the same bullet.

Also a fan of the Barnes TSX and TTSX, but Hornady also is now in the mix with their GMX line of bullets and ammo.

Just about any soft point that is accurate out of your gun will do the trick. I have used my AR to shoot quite a few deer in Roberton county and never had a problem, furthest one ran was a doe that made it 50 yards or so. Admittedly these deer aren't exactly 200 pound Kansas bucks, but I haven't met one yet that a 55 grain soft point hasn't handled easily.

Hornady sells ammo called American Whitetail exclusively at Academy that has a 60 gr Interlock bullet. That would be another option to consider.

i've shot deer and hogs with Winchester power point .223 and M855 green tip. none have known the difference or ran anywhere. i've pretty much stopped using any other gun.

I like the hornady GMX, because my gun shoots the 55gr GMX and VMAX the same.

and don't do a face-forward head shoot..too much of a chance that you just break their jaw and they run off and just starve to death.

What part of the body are y'all aiming at with .223? Head shots I assume?

i put it in the boiler maker. i don't find there to be enough meat in the ribs of Texas whitetail to bother trying head and neck shots.

I use 64gr winchester power points out of my AR. Does the job just fine. It will do plenty of damage to a doe at 100 yards.

Been using the 62 gr. Federal Fusion MSR. As long as the boy, Klobasnek, makes a good shot nothing has run more that 50 yards. All shots in the heart/lung area.

I had some Remington 75gr hollow point rounds that worked wonders on deer. Unfortunately I made the mistake of using that same magazine on a group of hogs one day. It worked wonders on them too, but I used all the rounds and I haven't seen them on the shelf again.

Hornady has a 75gr BTHP match round that Academy usually carries. I shot a doe with one a few years ago, but it didn't perform as well as the power point. I don't think those hollow points are really made for hunting anyway.

I hunt white tail and blackbuck with this ammo in my ar and I've dropped then all with neck shots

I'm using hornady 75 gr steel match.

Get them close and ear hole or neck shoot them.

I shot 3 deer with my ar last year. A spike and 3 does. They were a calculated risk (like every shot) but I had a short distance and a steady rest in my favor

As I understand it, twist rate plays a big part with the heavier bullets.

I use 55 grain Hornady v max on doe most of the time. Never had one move other than straight down

Not a .223, but I've used the 55 gr V-max and the Fusion round in a .22-250. I don't usually do neck shots. Behind the shoulder, the V-max pretty much looks like a bomb went off in the thoratic cavity. The Fusion punches out with about a fist size hole. So far they both have resulted in about one good jump or drop right there.

These are probably going to be your best bet for a widely available round.

I like using ammo that's loaded to true 5.56 pressures with premium bullets. Currently Hornady TAP Barrier with the 55gr GMX for hunting and defensive use.

I use steel cased wolf. Shoot in the heart. Most of my shots are less than 50 yds so take it for what its worth

This is the bullet I reload with. Very accurate and holds together well. You don't need premium bullets in a 223 to take deer.

Shoot them with anything. If they run off there are plenty to take their place...

I hope you said this in jest. If not, you should not be hunting.

As bad as hogs.
If hogs had horns the state would also take ownership.

The feral hog situation does change the rules somewhat; is it unethical to shoot a sow with a litter of obviously dependent piglets?

I have and will, based purely on the havoc the hogs wreak on our property.

I can certainly relate to this emotion in regards to deer depredation.

edit: that's why the permit exists though obviously.
ursusguy

If I shoot something, plain and simple I'm going to put it down as fast as possible.

The statement I commented on sounds like wanton waste of game.

I've done deer depredation removals (quite a few in fact) I still take very calculated shots. And make a concerted effort to find every one. If remotely questionable on deer, I won't take the shot.....granted, when it was depredation or work related, I generally didn't view it as hunting. I was there simply as a shooter.
