I'll be in a timeshare along a canal of Jamaica Beach next week and plan to kayak fish extensively in the area - anywhere within a 5 mile round trip paddle. Does anyone have advice to share from experiences fishing the canals (particularly around submerged lights at night), or the adjacent areas such as Bird Island Cove, Ostermeyer Cove, Jumbile Cove, Carancahua Cove, Butterowe Bayou, Oak Bayou, etc.? Google Earth shows some promising structure, potholes and features, but someone who has been there and done it is better than my guesses as to where to find fish.

All of my kayak and wade fishing experience is limited to the Port A/Rockport area. Thanks in advance.

All the locations you listed can be good. One I would add is the Galveston Island State park on the bay side. You can launch your kayak and paddle and fish from there as well.

I'm a big fan of the coves in the state park. I've never caught anything big there but when the conditions are right you get gin clear water over grass and there are decent numbers of reds in there. Trout along the breakwaters too.

Unless you're fishing during the week you'll have company though as that's a favorite destination for the plastic flotilla.

Family has place in Spanish Grant, just down the road. Some good places to go with a Kayak near Jamaica.

Let me warn you now, fish bite has been extremely early and over quickly. Be prepared for early fishing.

Get a partner and go right off the beach half a mile and catch blacktip Sharks

I like to launch at the west launch in the state park, paddle out to the breakwater, beach the kayak, and wade that sand flat to the north.

Jumbile can be decent but it's a bit of a paddle out of Jamaica. This time of year redfish will be up against the spartina grass terrorizing shrimp.

Jumbile also has some sandy spots that may clear up enough for flounder gigging if you have the gear. Lots of rays though so be careful wading.

Headed down there this week (Thursday - Monday) any updates from anyone and spots/times etc to kayak to? We rented a canal house with the family. Want to catch something with my little girls, but also going to go on my own at various points.

Check out Eckart's Bayou and then head towards Starvation Cove near the geo tubes. I'll be fishing that area, albeit in a boat, this coming weekend.

I've never launched a kayak there but tons of people do. I believe the enter at the same place the Galveston bird people do. Be careful about snakes though… they're thick in there.

Wow, blast from the past…I was the OP. Had a lot of success fishing at night in the underwater lights. Swim baits and rattletrap type chrome lures worked the best to catch specs and some reds. As you glide up toward the lights from a distance you'll see large predator fish moving. Keep your distance so you don't spook them and cast past the lights and retrieve through them. Casting directly into them will spook the fish. Catch one or two then move on.

The kids had some success catching trout from the dock lights at our spot. Had a great time with lots of fun memories! Hope the same to you.
