Posted this on the Nerdery, but wanted to see if the OB had any input:

I recently remodeled the back patio and was looking to add a place to watch TV in the back and have friends over to watch football, etc. I have been looking into building a cabinet for a tv, but I have a concern about protecting it from the weather. Not only from rain, but also from condensation buildup inside the cabinet. Also, I would like to be able to take it with me for Aggie tailgating and camping trips, if at all possible.

The other day, I saw a projector at the AT&T store that caught my attention. My thought is that I could build a shelf that hangs off the ceiling of the patio to put the projector up high and out of the way and have it project on a portable screen. Then I could unplug it when not in use to keep it out of the weather. Also, it would be a lot easier to transport for camping and tailgating. My two biggest concerns with the projector are the amount of space needed to get a decent size picture, and ability to see on bright days since the picture is being projected instead of backlit.

Just wondering if anyone on here has done this and if they think a projector would be a viable option

I wouldn't suggest a projector outside for anything except nighttime viewing.

There are projector calculators out there to calculate the size/distance.

I put mine in a cabinet with no doors under our pergola. I just use a vinyl cover and haven't had any trouble in the couple of years it has been there. My biggest concern with a projector would be how long it takes to set up each time you use it.

TVs are cheap. Buy the size you want, cover it as much as you can, and buy a new one when that one fails.

I agree with 2009. Buy a tv and try to keep it covered. I doubt a projector is going to be bright enough outdoors, especially if you are doing it for football, with most games being during daylight hours.

I have had a vinyl cover on mine for four years now and not a single issue.

I have a 32" Dynex that is mounted where the breezeway from the detached garage connects to the house. It gets sprayed during sideways rain, and the kids hit it with the water hose every once in a while.

It has been there for 4 years. I wish it would die so I could justify a bigger TV. I leave it plugged in all of the time.

Just build a cabinet that covers it mostly.

I wish MF Barnes was still around so he could show us what he has

Sports bars with outdoor patios do this all over the world. Just get a vinyl or plastic cover for the TV.
