So my work occasionally takes me close to the coast or lakes when I have an afternoon or a few hours to kill and I try to go fishing when this happens. I have 3 rods, longest is an 11ft surf rod, a medium 7ft rod, and a light 6ft rod. Downside of having all these in the truck is they are either rattling and in the way in the cab or rolling around in the bed and I have to worry about them getting stolen.

I wanted to put a tube in the bed but since it's my work truck I didn't want to drill holes. In the new Fords there are 4 cleats that are able to be removed that line up perfectly with the beams inside the bed. Here is a photo of one cleat and the other removed.

I took a 4" pvc pipe and bolted it directly to the cleats and capped one end. The truck has an electric tailgate lock so there's no way to take the poles out unless the tailgate is opened. This keeps the rods out of the cab but still protected from the elements and thieves. Best part is that if I need to remove the tube all I have to do is turn the keys on the cleats and the entire thing pops out in 10 seconds. Holds all 3 rods but I would have to jump up to a 6" pipe if I wanted to fit more.

Very cool.

I'm assuming you take the reels off?

Yes, I keep them in the tackle box anyway. You might be able to fit a baitcast or spincast in the 4" tube, maybe 2 if you are good at jigsaw puzzles. Not sure if it would work with a spinning reel unless you went with the 6" tube.

Looks better than the bungee cords I use.

I have to use bungees for my 8 foot rod, so I'm bettin' they break down.

Looks good, can you share a picture of how you attached the PVC to the cleat?
That gives me some ideas of things I could do with my truck

You need a $500 rod vault with a $300 DeYoung skin on it.

Does it need a Yeti sticker or is that going too far?

I did something similar a few years ago with a 6" diameter. i made it long enough to fit up to 7' rods, can hold about 7-8 rods. I wrap the tips and butts in a small towel and insert into the tube, threaded cap on one end and a permanently attached radiused cap on the other end

Nice setup.

I hate setting up and breaking down 2 peice surf rods for transport. Such a pain to string up the 12 fters. Someday I want to get a roof rack setup like the one below for rod transport. I have vertical rod holders on my toolbox but I just don't trust them at highway speeds.

I wonder how many people who read this thread knew what you were talking about without the googles.

Sorry for the slow response. Here are a few photos of the connection. I just used stainless bolts with a washer inside the pvc tube and a lock nut on the outside

I didn't see a Doss sticker on your truck.
