I'm taking my Dad and my son (8 yrs old) out on Lake Whitney this Saturday evening and Sunday morning. I'm confident I can put them on largemouths, but would really like to find some whites for my son.

If any of you know Lake Whitney and can share some tips, it would be greatly appreciated.

Never fished Whitney but try to graph schools on points and humps. Then troll or vertically jig.

Also look for surface activity as they bust shad.

Back in the 90s, we would find them chasing shad to the top of the water. It would literally look like it was raining there were so many. We would use clear torpedos or, my favorite, a popping cork with about three to four feet of leader and a chatruse or white road runner. The popping cork setup allowed you to stay a distance away from the school and cast into it. We would take binoculars and watch for diving birds. Also, in these schooling situations, you can drop a "Hopkins" spoon or a striper jig to catch bigger sand bass and striper. Some of my most memorable fishing trips as a kid occurred at Whitney. Good luck!!!

Thanks, guys. I've done a bit of map study, and think I've identified a few spots to check. Kubiak, that's almost exactly how I remember fishing there during the mid/late-90's. I'll make sure to pack some binoculars.

what Kubiak described is pretty much how we did it. I was there about a month ago on a work trip with some customers and we tore them up. Had a dang good time and fish fry afterwards.

Thanks, agfan. Do you mind sharing what time, and at what part of the lake were you fishing?

Absolutely, we would leave out from the boat ramp by lake whitney marina (take juniper cove rd to get to) about 8:00 both mornings and fished to about 12 and then went back out from 2:00 to 5:00 or 6:00. Both days we fished in various places all south of the FM 1713 bridge that cuts across the lake. If I remember right we hit a few places near the state park and McCown Valley park.

I cant remember which area it was but on the second day when we found them chasing shad near the surface, I at one point had 9 or 10 straight casts with a catch, it literally wasnt fishing anymore, it was catching!

Whitney got rocked by a gold algae bloom in 2003. I don't think it's been the same ever since. Had my single best day of fishing in my entire life there. RIP Whitney

Troll deep diving crankbaits (just barely past idle) along points and creek channels. Lazy mans fishing, but when it is hot and you have a kid along, it helps. Once you find fish, drop some spoons or jigs.
