How long do you want to ignore this user?
Howdy folks. Me and several other buddies are headed to Red River this weekend. Really want to make the trip up to Goose Lake and was wondering if it could be done in a 4x4 pickup. It's a 2011 Tundra with a small lift and all terrain tires.

I'd like to take the truck and avoid renting a jeep, but if it's not safe to do so, we can just bite the bullet and rent.

Thanks in advance.

Do yourself a favor and just rent one. I go to Red River at least 4 times per year. Think about if you have a problem, you are stuck in Red River with no means to go get parts or whatever.

Did it in a '93 full size Chevy Blazer back in the late-90s. We survived. There's a lot of larger diameter shot rock (one foot plus) and the switchbacks are pretty tight in areas. You need a tight turning vehicle, IMO. I recall that we developed several rattles in that Blazer that we didn't have before.

I'm no scientologist, but based on this video and what's in the parking lot at the end of the video, I would say a tundra would make it no problem...I bet there is a Subaru outback by the lake when you get there.

Looks pretty easy. Bet you would never even need 4wd.

The comment about the Outback is absolutely correct, and don't be shocked to find a busted a-- sedan or station wagon.

I took a 2wd 98 Dodge Ram (not going to say it it was easy), and a 4wd Tacoma (that was easy) up there.

Make it up to Cabresto lake and middle fork lake if you can.

I remember greenie peak being a relatively easy trek.

50 years ago when I was a kid and dinosaurs walked the earth, we did the trip once in an international scout, once in a CJ-5 jeep. Vastly prefer jeep. It could make most of the switchbacks and pass other vehicles. Scout brushed a lot of trees and backed up the switchbacks that were too tight to turn.

The first time I went to Goose, there were about 5 other people there. It was quiet and beautiful.

The last time I went to Goose, there were 60 or 70 vehicles up there and a constant hum of 4 wheelers coming and going.

Now I look for harder trails.

I really appreciate all of the responses. Any other must-dos while i'm there? I may end up renting just to avoid the trouble.

I would have let you borrow our four wheelers while up there , but we have moved to North Caorlina.

Which trail did they close to motor vehicles? We used to go to RR every summer in the mid-late 90s. There always seemed to be a rescue on goose lake trail. Iirc there were some big boulders in the road way. Maybe they have since been moved.
