Thinking of storing ammo in a shipping container. The boxes state, "Keep away from heat." My guess is the temperatures might get to 150F inside during the Texas summer.

Thoughts?

I would think that would definitely be too hot for long term storage. Probably fine for temporary/intermediate storage.

Think about all of the weapons stored in cars in the summer. I've never heard of a gun going boom due to the ammo getting too hot in the console.

Also, if they weren't having problems with ammo going "boom" inadvertently in Iraq in the summer, you should be good as long as you don't put it in the oven.

They won't go boom but the powder would probably start to degrade.

Mythbusters did a segment on it. No boom. At least in car anyway.

Ding, ding, ding--this is the answer. Lots of stories over the years about truck guns, and esp. ammo stored on the dash being completely ineffective, wildly inaccurate, low powered, etc.

Does the powder break down due to high temperature stress or does it break down due to big swings in temperatures over short periods of time? A truck could be 120F at one point and then cooled to 70F ten minutes later.

I've often kept ammo in the garage without having issues. I don't think the garage gets quite as hot as a shipping container would, though.

The box just reads "Keep away from heat." It doesn't give a quantity.

Likely hotter than that, 2 weekends ago it was 140 degrees in my truck which has heavily tinted windows and unless you have a reefer, that container isn't insulated.

Ammo is stored in Iraq and Afghanistan for years in shipping containers with no issue.

Modern double base powders start to degrade the second they are made, high or low rwmps, moisture or large temp swings, can (but not necessarily will) speed up the decay process.

Can you please get this info out to all the ammo hoarders!

This is why I stash mostly eastern block surplus. Berdan primers. 7n6, east block 7.62x54r, Romanian 8mm Mauser. Stuff lasts forever

Not yet insulated. Working on that part. The goal is shipping container cabins.

how hot does a drying machine get? we've all left rounds in our pockets before, right?

Anybody ever had one go off?

Safe for short term exposure=\=good for long term storage

Short of storing your ammo in a fire you probably aren't going to have them explode/go boom. Most gun powder manufacturers recommend that powder be stored in a cool dry place to prolong the life of the powder. I think I read somewhere that powder starts to degrade much faster at temperatures above 90-95F.

you must have a ****e load of ammo to need a shipping container for storage

I wish I had that much lol

ETA: can anybody give a little more info about powder that doesn't age, and if so where do I go about getting it? Can you put that type of powder in your reloads?
