Been doing a lot of hiking around our place and seeing a lot more rattlers than normal. We typically use summer weight military boots and find them comfortable. Never used snake boots or Gaitors ? or anything similar. With the tall grass there are places now that I'm concerned to travel that I would have just busted through in the past. Mostly just sticking to the mowed ranch paths now.

Is there snake boot option that isn't too hot and I can walk a couple of miles in? Don't know the first thing about them . Thanks,,,

Gokey Snake Boots from Orvis. Best you can get and they don't look half bad either

Chippewa's. Buy once, cry once.
They are about double the price of the Game Winner brand at Academy, but much less clunky and a whole lot cooler.

Chippewas are the standard for all others to be judged

I usually go with comfortable boots and lightweight snake chaps.

I have the Justin slip ons. Had them for several years and still going strong. Got mine on sale for $99 at Cavendars, a significant savings compared to the Chippewas. Not mine in the picture, but I have the same ones, and have about the same age to them. I wear them with shorts in the summer. Not terribly uncomfortable, and not terribly hot. But they are snake boots, and they are stiff, and take a little getting used to.

This. I worked in the woods for years and wore the lightweight chaps when needed. Quick and easy to put on or take off.

My job mandates that I walk many miles through swamp, I on a regular basis run across snakes. Because of this my work mandates that I wear snake protection. Chaps are useless if walking long distances, boots are the only practical method. The irish setter vapor trek dos good for about 6-months till I walked the tread off them. The lacrosse dos decent had three pairs as I kept exchanging inside the 3-month window. I'm now on the water proof Chippewas, had them a few months and they are far and away the beat boots I've had. Normal week of field work is walking minimum of 20 miles in wet swampy conditions.

I love my Chippewas. I did have to get the heel reinforced because they started to come unsewed, but since then they've been wonderful.

Going on 15 years with the same pair of Chippewas. This time of year I wear them every other day or so. And yes, they work well for their purpose.

Don't worry about boots. They are all just rat snakes!

Well, my job involves walking 15 to 20 miles per day through corn fields and cotton fields in 90 to 100 degree heat in an area where there might me a rattlesnake behind every weed. I have both, but lightweight chaps work better for me, because the boots are usually hotter than hell on my feet and legs.

For any kind of dry area where you won't sink in above your hi king boot chaps work. But any kind of soft or wet area and your gunna want to buy a tall boot and chunk the chaps. I wish my work was a easy as walking through a corn field versus fighting my way through a Louisiana swamp. Albeit sometime we run into those fields and we love it when we do as a typical day we delineate 2-3 miles. When we runnin to a plowe field we can core some ground real fast.

Here is where I bought my Chippewas, They were $209 when I bought mine last year, but still a great price for the waterproof ones.

Took them back to the store I purchased from, that also does shoe and boot repair. They just stitched the hell out of the back of the boot and melted the frayed ends. I did catch it pretty early though.

My waterproof pair had the same separation on the heel as above when they were about 8 months old. I sent them back to Justin and they sent me a brand new pair. YMMV.

Same pair of Chippewas for 10 years. Outlasted just about every other pair of boots I've owned. Comfortable too- just takes a bit to break them in.

Mine have done the same but are much older. I'm not looking to a new pair, just get these fixed. Based on this thread, it seems to be a Justin quality issue.

Where did you send the boots?

To the Langdon Road, Dallas address?

I will disagree on the waterproof Chippewas. I have a pair that is 6 years old and I seldom wear them because they are very hot. I grew up on a dairy and hated rubber boots from my first pair still to this day, so that could be why I do not like them.

I'm going to let you boys in on a little secret for getting a brand new pair of snake boots on the cheap. Go to snakeboots.com and click on the first boot which is the gold standard for Chippewa. When it opens up click the Discounted "As Is" Imperfects. About $90 cheaper than the regular boots and imperfections so minor you will probably not notice. Mine had a scratch in the side of the left leather foot and a tiny stitching wobble on the right upper. Talked to the lady that runs the store and she said most of the time they can not see what's wrong with them but Chippewa flags them so that's what they are

Yes most likely if you were bitten on the boot. The problem is the height of the boot. My close call with a 4 foot rattler a few years ago resulted in a scratch on the back of my leg right above the top of my work boot. That's when I started wearing chaps.

My only problem with them is I'm in the low wet country, really like the waterproof ones. Most of the chips are not waterproof.

I've been living on borrowed time for too long with just a pair of heavy duty leather work boots so this thread came along at the right time.

Let me ask you pros a few --

1. How high up a man's leg (in inches) do we need to protect?

2. What about those snap-on hard plastic chaps that protect up to the knee?

and,

3. If you've ever been struck while wearing your snake protection, what's it feel like? Some things I've read made it sound like it's similar to a guy swinging a ball bat at your shin.

Thanks.

There are waterproof Chippewas. They have a waterproof sock that works awesome. It's just thicker and adds an extra layer of insulation that doesnt work so well in the summer. The water protection is awesome.

The snap on hard plastic things will have you running to the store for Chippewa's within an hour. Those things suck.

You want to protect to your knees.

1. Most snake boots are 18".

2. hard plastic snap on = doo doo.

3. I have been struck on the hard leather part of a boot on the foot, and never felt a thing. On the chaps I felt a thump, but not much.
