How long do you want to ignore this user?
Question for the OB...who has a gun friendly insurance company that also provides good service? I'm in need of renters insurance. I currently have Allstate for auto and could get renters through them, but a buddy in the insurance business tells me that Allstate is one of the worst insurance companies when it comes to claims. He recommended Amica (even though he works for State Farm).

I got an auto and renters quote from Amica, but when I called to ask some questions things went south. I wanted to make sure that my firearms would be covered against theft. They require guns to be itemized for full coverage, which I'm finding is pretty normal, but told me they only cover rifles and shotguns. No handguns. I also did a little research and found several people saying that Amica either denied a new policy or cancelled an existing policy because they had too many guns or certain types of guns. So, Amica isn't for me.

That brings me back to the original question. What insurance companies are y'all using that will cover theft of firearms?

We have a piggy back policy for personal valuable property that covers only our guns and jewelry. Ours is through usaa.

I do not believe fire arms can be covered on renters or homeowners (I think that's why we took out the separate policy)

I can't get USAA, unfortunately.

I understand, but look into a separate personal valuable property policy. Most companies should have these types of policies. If they limit your number, you may have to take out multiple policies. At one point I think the magic number was 6.

+1 on adding a rider for guns. I use Farm Bureau.

They are covered under Renters and HO, or they always have been for me, the kicker is the limit is usually like $1500 to $2500 that goes away in a real hurry if you buy anything other than $500 O/Us.

I am getting working on getting a policy from SIAI. It covers you against fire, theft, damage, etc. while at home and traveling.

That may be why we did the separate policy. Thanks!

I have a "high value" policy through USAA as well. Im sure other insurance agencies write similar policies. Either that or you need to bump the insured amount up enough to cover the guns

Something to think about, if you have to file a claim on a rifle that damaged when flying out of state for a hunt then your whole HO policy is probably going to go up. I might be wrong but that is what I remember reading at one point.

State Farm has a separate firearm policy.

I think mine covers $5000 and is ~$100/year.

I use Amica because they have outstanding customer service and saved me $3600 (vs State Farm) on 2 houses and 3 cars.

My gun and document insurance is 2 top of the line, moderate size safes, that were built into the house structure.

I looked into the High Value property policy form USAA and didn't pull the trigger. I believe my base coverage was up to $10,000. At the time I made that decision I figured I keep most everything of real value locked up. If they get 1000lbs of safe out of my home then I'll regret it. If it's a smash and grab, I'll lose a couple TV's, a blue ray player, maybe the dvd player, a laptop, a tablet, maybe a camera, and maybe a nightstand gun. That's all under the $10,000 limit and I don't have to give them an inventory of what I've got.

I have no doubt they have excellent customer service, but if you have handguns they're not covered under your policy with Amica. They quoted me $440 for a firearm rider for my rifles and shotguns, but Allstate quoted me $340 and would cover the handguns as well. I'm just hearing Allstate isn't very good for claims, otherwise I wouldn't have started this thread.

Also, for those of you saying your guns are covered by the base personal property coverage, you might want to double check with your insurance company and verify.

At least with Allstate, all my guns would be covered in full in the case of loss to fire or storm. To get them covered for THEFT requires a separate policy or rider.

My agent put it under a personal articles policy along with my camera/laptop/jewelry. Dirt cheap with no deductible when used.

She also said they are covered under home owners as well, so if your house burns, you pay your 1 deductible and it covers everything. The PAP is good when only your itens are lost/stolen since you don't pay a huge deductible.

I have my renter's insurance through USAA. That policy will only cover up to $2500 worth of guns. I got a quote from them for a rider to that policy to cover the true value of the guns I own.

Then I got a quote from the NRA - and it beats USAA significantly. If you are an NRA member, you can get $2500 worth of their ArmsCare insurance at no cost. Additional insurance is of course additional. You can calculate your nominal premium here:

Is your only source of info on Allstate claim service from your State Farm buddy? If so, I'd ask around some more. I find it hard to believe that Allstate service would be any different than the other big insurance companies that you're considering. And staying with them usually means a multi-policy discount as well as being able to hold their feet to the fire as a multi-policy client if the claim process is a bit frustrating. I'm a State Farm customer for multiple policies and get a discount on my separate valuables policy that covers guns and jewlery.

This seems like an interesting/inexpensive option ... anyone else utilizing this company?

Some of the big companies make claims a pain in the ass. Only a couple I know of will actually try to deny legit claims. Allstate is not one of those companies. That said we use germania and unfortunately have had to file several claims but they were as easy to deal with as it could possibly be

If you look into replacement value the total price of a collection adds up fast. If something happens I don't want to have to search for a deal on a gun like I did the first time, I want to go down to my LGS and buy a new one. Also, when you start adding in scopes, rings, magazines, lights, shoulder thingys that go up, cases etc. the total value goes up quick.

That seems like the way to go. It quoted me $144, which is $300 cheaper than Amica quoted me and $200 cheaper than what Allstate is quoting me. I'm an NRA member but had no idea they offered this. Maybe my problem is solved!

our renters insurance covered the pistols I had stolen.
It was two pistols, two lap tops, a digital camera, and an ipod so we were still under our coverage limit

I called Amica yesterday about scheduling my firearms and she didn't mention that. We discussed valuations and I specifically mentioned a pistol that isn't made anymore and we came to the agreement that they would take a printout of the pistol on sale at Gunbroker to set the value.

We actually joked and she asked if I was her husbands twin when we were talking. I guess I'm going to call back and verify....

It's always possible the guy I spoke with didn't have a clue what he was talking about, but he specifically told me that they don't cover handguns in their homeowners or renters insurance policies. I asked why and he said he didn't know...that it was just their policy.

I have renters insurance through State Farm. Also got a $10,000 policy for my guns - about $125/yr ( about the same as the NRA offers per prior post. I did have to list SNs of those covered.

It may vary from state to state, but I think I have something like $10k in firearms insurance from Allstate, plus whatever I have from being a life member of NRA. I figure with my gun-safe that has me well enough covered. I can itemize my firearms and get a rider, but I didn't want that much documentation/pain in the ass.

Allstate is total garbage, worst insurance company in America. They don't care about your other policies either. I deal with every insurance company in America every day, it's shocking how poorly Allstate treats their customers. The adjusters are rude, combative and completely full of ****. Stay away.

With the NRA sponsored insurance, the only guns that you have to itemize are those that are valued at more than $2500. Serial numbers, even on itemized guns, are not required, but IIRC a description of condition of itemized guns is. The amount you pay for is in addition to the $2500 of no cost insurance you get (if you activate it) from being a NRA member.

I inherited quite a few firearms when my father passed, a couple of them potentially falling into that over $2500 category. While I was sorting out which to keep, which to sell, and which to give away, I realized that some of those guns are not easily replaced and was able to adjust my coverage accordingly in minutes.

The NRA insurance works best for me. YMMV
