I bet I could be done in half the time it takes him with a pusher.

Dr_Boogs- It all depends on what size deck/type of engine you want. We (I work for a Deere dealer in Dalhart) have Zero Turns from a Z335E 42" deck, that before tax is priced at $2,499, up to a Z540R that is at $6,099 before tax.
In my opinion as others have stated, a ZTR is a little excessive for an acre or less. Although we have sold a lot of ZTR's to people with just normal sized yards (it's all personal preference). For a lot that size I would suggest the D155, S240 or the D170 (all Deere of course). Plus like others have said you can pull small trailers and other attachments with these.

And most importantly, with the ZTR's you CAN still drink beer while mowing, just make sure your tracking is adjusted correctly, plus the handles are close enough that you can hold onto both (while going straight) with one hand.

Have a few trees to mow around and my land is not flat. Leaning towards that cubcadet with the steering wheel or the 42" Deere ZTR

Depends on the lot in my opinion.

Regular mower if you don't have a lot of trees and obstacles to mow around also if you have quite a bit of slope on your yard. It is slower but will do the job just fine.

Zero Turn is faster, easier to go around objects and trees. It is a lot heavier so you will wear a tire track on the outside edge of the property (you will also need to change up mowing patterns or get the same effect) and it does not handle slopes or deeper ditches very well at all.

Best of luck!

We're having lawn mower races on the 4th of July. Separate class for push mowers. They might also divide the riding mowers into zero turn and non zero turn classes.

We've got multiple lawns. I bought a commercial grade JD ZTR and it's been well worth it. Today I tackled a back parcle that hadn't been mowed yet this year, and after all that rain it was very high. The JD handled it, though. That's a nice thing about having one of the big boys, you can tackle a project like that if you need to.

But yeah for a half acre residential it's prolly overkill. One good thing about a push mower is it gives you a little workout.

On a half acre lot, a ZTR might save you 5-6 minutes.

The peoples that don't know shjt about mowers will be impressed. The well seasoned country folk will snicker as they drive by. Happy mowing!!!

Over what? I have about 1/3 acre. I started with a 21" walk behind before my aunt gave me a 30" Murray rider that she wasn't able to use anymore. Not ZTR but still turns reasonably tight. Easily saved me half the time (probably a bit more) on mowing front yard. With a 42" ZTR, I'd bet I could cut that time close to in half again. Have a few trees to go around but nothing excessive. Curious as to what you base the 5-6 minutes on because when this current mower dies, I'm probably going ZTR.

I would suggest buying a riding mower. In my opinion that is way too small of a yard to require a zero turn. My yard is just over an acre with many obstacles and I mow it in 30 minutes with my cheap ass Craftsman rider. Now I will agree with others that a good zero turn will produce a prettier yard right after mowing. Just ask yourself: is it worth the extra $2k?

Compared to a modern day rider with the same size deck. I have a 6 year old Cub Cadet rider that can knock out 1.25 acres in 35 minutes at 7 mph with a 50-in deck. If I were the OP, I'd go get a 42" JD or Cub Cadet.

Thanks. Maybe I have an inflated opinion about what a true zero turn radius could do wrt to time saving. I still believe it would save me a lot more than 5-6 minutes even on my my smaller lot than what I would spend even if my current rider had a 42" deck.
