I'm getting new tires for my F150. I'm looking at BFG TA/KO2s. I now live a few miles down a gravel road and have had 3 flats in 4 weeks on my crappy goodyears.

The price difference between the tire is $11 per tire.

Should I go with the 10 or 6 ply?

I will be occasionally hauling a travel trailer.

I'll jump in before Silvy (auto-board resident) negates my feedback, although he is a very wise man on tires (we are both DTC former employees):

I have the same truck
2014 FX4
P275-65-18 Goodyears that had 3-4 flats but rode like a nice street tire. The increase in plies will help with flats but don't get too hung up on the necessity of a 10ply for your truck. I just think these OE Goodyear tires are really good at catching nails.

I wanted the LTX AT2s but in a D or E. They didn't have them so I just put on BFG AT2 LT 275/65/18Es on my truck.

Ride: actually very impressed with smoothness of the new ATs. Not rough at all (slightly more than OE tires). Only negative is the increased road noise; which is expected with a jump to a more aggressive tread pattern.

Performance: haven't been off road yet but on road it has slightly affected acceleration and gas mileage. You're running a heavier tire so it feels a little slower but not bad at all.

I am happy with my purchase and will hang up and listen.

What is causing flats?

Do you like a smooth ride?

Goodyear makes the tire...

Gravel road that has been graded several times recently turning over stuff. Two of the flats had belt separation. Also the goodyears that I put on were a one time deal for $400 bucks out the door at sams. I got two years out of them so I can't complain too much.

we are doing a remodel.

I fixed flat 4 and 5 last week in our cars sin Feb. My sport sedan tires are horrible. I had a finish staple in it.

Wife's OEM's on the suburban hold up pretty well but not to framing nails and dry wall screws.

Goodyear has known issues with belt seperations in addition to shoulder seperations and their Kevlar reinforced tires riding like crap.

Tread separation should be covered by Sam's? where they "old" but new when you bought them?

i would go with the 10 ply.

Haha! A finish staple? Might as well have been a finger nail.

Sitting at Discount Tire right now as they have a Memorial Day rebate and they at putting on a set of BFG 275/70/18. This will be my third set in the past 7 years. I put on a considerable amount of miles each year and spend a more than average time off road. Have yet to find something to complain about with these tires

If you have a septic tank you know there is no such thing as flushable wipes.

I must be the lucky guy with Goodyear. I have had 3 or 4 sets of their Wrangler AT on my F250 and have never had a problem. Tread life was good (~70-75k out of each set) and I never treated them all that well. Would still have a set but the Coopers i have now were on a heck of a good sale, and in stock.

In fact, only bad tire I have had was Toyo. Those things had horrible tread life for me.

It's all fun and game until you get a flat from a pine needle. Some how managed to get it stuck between the tire and rim. Probably the oddest flat I have ever had. Thank God my partner was 300+ lbs. The Phimont mechanic was notorious for really cranking down on the lug nuts, and we had no radio in the truck. Good times.

The 10 ply is superior if you're pulling a trailer much.

I had 6 flats last year that resulted in 5 new tires. I finally got fed up with it all and paid $325 each for a 10 ply and have not had a flat since august (knock on wood!)

My original KOs are terrible on anything except dry ground. They're also obnoxiously loud and rough riding. Granted they're 35s on a 20yr old Bronco, but I can't imagine the road manners on a new vehicle are any better. My understanding is the KO2 is a slightly different tread design.

I won't go over 45mph on a slick highway because they hydroplane on the smallest puddles. They also suck at clearing mud. I feel like I'm driving on ice when driving through the black gumbo on my ranch. They're great on rocks and dirt roads though.

I'd look for another brand of tire.

Ughhhh... Much better. The raptors and hummers came or come stock with 315 (nearly 35) BFG ATs.

You basically summed up all all terrains out there, minus the slick highway comment. All ATs suck in mud but they're better than a street tire.

All ATs and even my BFG MT and KM2s sucked in gumbo mud. Unless you're running a SS TSL or Bogger, gumbo mud just sucks.

To each it's own... Hard to find another all terrain that's THAT much better than these.

My only complaint with my ko2s is that they fling rocks/gravel like crazy.

Cooper atp/at3 are a good alternative that I've heard aren't as bad with the rocks.

I switched to Coopers last year on recommendation of a friend and I really like them. Little bit more aggressive tread design so they sing just a little bit on real smooth pavement.

Agree with 87IE. Go 10 ply and either Toyo or Bridgestone.

You can run 10 ply at 45 pressure and it is not as rough as you would expect. If you are going to drag a loaded trailer, pump the pressure up to 65 or 70.

I put 10 plys on my wife Expedition just because they last so much longer ... she gets used to it.

Love the 10 ply tire. Dad always taught me, "if you are going to skimp on something ... make sure it aint tires"

Toyo open country mud terrains on my dodge 3500. Wearing evenly and better in the rain then the factory BFG long trails. Truck is a kidney beater unless loaded, so I did not notice a difference.

Yes. Found out the hard way. Pump is a lot cheaper but very educational for the kids and the women...

Agree about running them a little higher than the factory 35psi but I would never run them at 65 or higher on a 1/2 ton. Nothing you will ever pull or haul will require it.
