I'm currently a grad student here at A&M. I'll be driving to California in a couple weeks for a summer internship. I have a license to carry in Texas and a Glock 9mm that I would like to take with me, especially for the 20 hour drive. On the other hand I don't want to end up on the wrong side of California law enforcement, either. Has anyone traveled to California with firearms and maybe have some insights? Many thanks.

Lock ammo and gun in separate containers in your trunk before you get to the CA border. You shouldn't have to register the gun since you aren't becoming a resident. You can't bring in any mags with a capacity >10 rounds. Your Texas CHL has no weight in CA. You won't be able to carry the gun loaded in your car. It'll be entirely for home defense. What part of the state are you going to? Some are more gun friendly than others.

Also, be aware of the Indian reservations on your way out there. Your CHL is no good and most reservations ban guns for non-tribe members. There are quite a few along I-10 in Arizona. You're generally ok to stop for gas with the gun on you, but outside of that you're risking issues if you have any interaction with LE.

No.....

https://oag.ca.gov/firearms/travel

quote:
Pursuant to California Penal Code section 25610, a United States citizen over 18 years of age who is not prohibited from firearm possession, and who resides or is temporarily in California, may transport by motor vehicle any handgun provided it is unloaded and locked in the vehicle's trunk or in a locked container. Furthermore, the handgun must be carried directly to or from any motor vehicle for any lawful purpose and, while being carried must be contained within a locked container.

Pursuant to California Penal Code section 16850, the term "locked container" means a secure container that is fully enclosed and locked by a padlock, key lock, combination lock, or similar locking device. This includes the trunk of a motor vehicle, but does not include the utility or glove compartment.

These are the idiots moving to our state and then wanting to vote for all the same policies over again...

I've heard some compare people like this to locusts. They look around and want out of the liberal state they live in to get away from high taxes, regulations, etc. So they move to red states, settle in, and begin voting for those same liberal policies, turning those states blue. Completely inexplicable. And what happens when Texas turns blue? I'm concerned this will happen in my lifetime. You won't be able to have a loaded gun in your car in Texas as well.

The good thing is that in California, the criminals are very honorable. Before they rob/assault/rape/murder you, they ask if you have a gun. If the answer is yes, they give you time to unlock and load the weapon before proceeding with the criminal act. Also, due to the magazine restrictions, if you empty your magazine without hitting them, they will surrender.

You won't have any issue open carrying or concealed carrying anywhere along the I-10 corridor in AZ outside of Tucson, and even then you'd have to be a monumental idiot to get in trouble.

For now. Our biggest threat isn't the folks coming here from California, it's the people trying to get DC to enact CA type gun laws on a national basis.

Thanks y'all. This has been very informative. I'm leaning toward leaving it. All my mags would be illegal. And I drive a truck so I'd have to buy an Al Gore (TM) LockBox. And I really keep it for defense when I'm driving more than home anyway. Plus I'll have a roommate I don't know yet.

I'll be in San Diego. Not sure if they have any especially punitive local ordinances. Though from what I understand it's one of the more "normal" places in CA--though more normal than San Fran and LA can't be too difficult.
