I just talked to the guy who sent it to my dad. It was definitely the woman that got bit, not the man.

My father was bitten by a rattlesnake 30 years ago while we were walking side by side in a field. I happened to look down right after the snake struck - saw it leaving his pant leg. My Dad didn't know what had happened - thought he had run into some old barb wire. Snake rattled after, not before. Dad only got one vial of anti venom. He was allergic to it and had to recover the old fashioned way with just antibiotics and time. Spent about a week in the hospital, and a couple more learning how to walk again. Really feel for the mom or whoever was bit. My Dad has had a "few" mishaps over the years (including being wounded in the Korean War), but he said the snake bite was the most pain he ever felt!

My cousin got bit 3 timeson the edge of the river by a rattlesnake while we were seining for bait. Never rattled. Didn't realize it wasn't stinging nettle until a long time later when we saw the bite marks as it swelled up.

I have it on good authority that the nuts were in fact shot off that snake. At least that's why my friend's friend's Facebook acquaintance's neighbor told her.

In regard to the "not rattling" I think thats a hasty generalization.

Rattlesnakes rely on camouflage to stay away from predators. Their rattle is generally the last line of defense to warn any predator not to come any closer. Once they rattle, they have compromised their location and easier located. It's a calculated move by the snake.

Two things:

1) how many incidents when a rattlesnake rattles, does it directly deter the person from being striked?
- probably a lot but there isn't really a metric on close calls with rattlers

2) the people bit by the snakes that didn't rattle likely stepped on the snake and it never had a chance to make its presence known and warn any passerby of its location.
-these situations are documentable and despite being very rare, the story is spread among the public easier and with more conviction than when someone simply had a close call and heard a snake rattle.

Bottom line:

Be careful where you walk... Not all encounters are avoidable but you can greatly reduce your risk of one by being mindful of your surroundings. We arent the only things outdoors that can hurt people.

Stay safe, y'all!

Based on the photo, here's what happened.

Daddy is holding his little girl getting ready for the pic. The dog is finally situated and Momma has been ready for 3 minutes. As Daddy is getting into final position, he either stepped on or kicked the snake, which got his attention and caused him to recoil and look down. If you look at the little girl in the last pic, she looks like she's starting to look down too, like, WTF is THAT?!?! Momma, of course, is clueless.

The first strike from the snake, instigated by Daddy's misplaced boot, missed Momma. If you look at the orientation of the striking snake to Momma's legs, the snake missed and passed between her legs. At this point, the s&^t's hitting the fan, Daddy pushes Momma out of the way, throws his little girl to Momma and returns his attention to the viper. The dog is going crazy, gets hit a couple of times before Daddy can intervene and Daddy subsequently takes one on the arm while getting the dog out of harms way.

I think that pretty much sums it up.
I actually think you could be onto something. I noticed the same thing about the little girl when I looked at the less censored pics. Dad is jerking that left arm back (as mentioned earlier), but the little girl is looking down too. Something grabbed her attention. As for the snake missing mamma,I kinda thought the same thing with how extended the snakes fangs are in that photo. I'm no viper strike expert but don't the fangs reach full extension about the time the strike is at it's greatest extent? Seems possible the snake is about to fall short of catching mom's hand/forearm.

Mom went over and nealt down. Dad set up teh camera and framed the pic around mom and perhaps daughter already there or waiting with dad. Dad set the timer on the camera, scoops up daughter and walks over and starts to kneel down. Could have even been the dog that caused the snake to suddenly feel cornered and have no reasonable path for escape.

This is what happened
I was on the phone with the woman's Dad 2 weeks ago, 3 days after it happened.
He was still shaken by the event and couldn't stop from being emotional about almost having his daughter and granddaughter bitten.
They actually didn't even notice the snake was captured in the picture until a day or two later.

I was told it was the woman that got bit, not the man. And the person that told me last night got the info from his daughter who got it directly from the dad of the bitten woman. FWIW. I'm not saying my info is 100% foolproof, just letting you know how much stock to put (or not put) in it.

Agan, the woman was not bitten and if you read what I wrote you would see how much stock I have in it.
Here are a few other details.
Man spent two days in hospital, will have nerve damage in his leg.
There were several other snakes under them but not sure how many, they didn't get to kill any as when **** hit the fan they were trying to get the kid and themselves out of there.
This all happen on a place in Bebe, outside of Gonzales.
Man taking picture is father of woman, grandfather of kid
He has been a personal friend of mine for over 30 years, lives in Ft. Bend county and has been in the landscaping business since the early 80's.

By looking at the picture, and if it's true and the snake missed the mother, dad's big feet actually may have been what helped her. It looks like he may have stepped on it and actually kept it from being able to strike as far.
