Boating with baby/toddler

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I figured this would be the best place to ask this. My husband and I like to go out on the lake or river frequently during the summer (we have a 16' basstracker, nothing fancy).

I worry about bringing my 1 year old on the boat. He has a pfd, but is there any type of toddler/infant seat for a boat? I only found 1 online, and it was a swing to be hung from the Bimini top.

Thanks for the advice, and sorry if this is the wrong place to ask.

My wife was always the toddler seat when we were underway and that worked out fine

Yeah, see, I like to fish too. And occasionally have a drink (any drink ) that I don't have to be worried about having knocked out of my hand.

Also, I think he would be more comfortable napping if he had some sort of chair

We would take the Bumbo on the ski boat or lap hold.

You could get a ratcheting strap and run it around the boat seat then run it through the seatbelt harness in the car seat

I found your problem. If he's on a boat, he needs a PFG, not a PFD.

I'm an idiot. I assumed you were providing a helpful answer. Sorry

Unfortunately he's too big for the carrier carseat, and I'd prefer to not bring his massive convertible seat on the boat.

Thanks though

I'm sorry, but strapping a kid in while boating doesn't seem good if the boat has an accident and the kid is strapped in.

Take a bumbo for them to sit in while you fish and keep their life jacket on.

Hold them when the boat is moving.

I never said I wanted to strap him in. Just looking for a seat.

I had thought of his Bumbo, unfortunately he has exceeded the weight limit and no longer fits in it.

Unfortunately at that age/size (~ 1yr old), it gets difficult to confine them without a car seat. If you had a pontoon you could set up a pack n play, but in a 16' bass boat you are limited on options. I can't really think of anything else right now.

That's what I was afraid of.

I'm betting my husband will likely just have to boat me and the kiddo over to the marina. The river will be challenging though

He could sit in the bottom of the boat while you're fishing, but we all know that would last about 4 minutes...

Exersaucer could work?

Not enough room in that size boat. 2 seats and live well with bench type seat on top

Sounds like an excuse for another boat.

Husband works in o&g. No budget for a new boat for quite a while it looks like.

Toddler sized bean bag. You are welcome.

My oldest son would always just crash out on the boat. I would bring towels and create a shady bed for him under the console (17' boat so not a lot room) that allowed me to fish and drink a beer. But if he was up I was normally holding him. It gets so much easier when they are 18 months-2 and can walk around and be less dependent on you to hold them. Juice water and snacks are also your friend. When we would anchor off and swim I had a different float to put on him that wasn't as confining either. It was like a bathing suit with a donut around the middle. It was a lot easier on both of us to use that when not going.

Thanks. I'll probably end up doing something like that. I didn't even think about bringing one of his other "floaties".

We always keep a cooler full of food, snacks, drinks, etc.

I know it's not what you asked for but get a baby sitter while y'all are out on the water. Probably more enjoyable for everyone involved.

Our lake trips are usually 2 or 3 day trips. Not gonna leave myour kiddo with the loons in this town. Lol

There is a reason I stay home, and it has nothing to do with not wanting to work.

Throw him in the live well and call it a kiddie pool.

I got no serious answer.

Yeah. I know it will be tough. He has 2 pfds that have the head support, between leg strap, and grab handle.

He hates them, but he can deal.

Mine is six and he's still a pain in the ass in the boat. Wish you the best of luck.

We always take our small grandchildren. Regulations vary but 16 ft boats require small kids wear life vests the whole time. But it's too hot for them and they get miserable. 24 ft plus boats don't require life vests on the kids all the time where we are so that's what we got. I would take my kids and have fun no matter what. Time with you in the outdoors are memories your children will always cherish. Personally I am too old to follow parenting rules from government workers whom I consider ignorant fools!

Our regulations say if the boat is in motion they have to have a life jacket on. I don't live in Texas

Again, just looking for a chair/seat. Nothing else.

Sounds like you should have kept it in your pants. Take your fun parts out on the town, end up with a kid and understand that your drinking and fishing time is going to be diminished.

Sean, I think the OP's fun parts never really come out of the pants. I think the pants just cover them.

If your going out for a day on the lake, just get a babysitter. Problem solved.

Bean bags work great on boats.

Get one and get the boy a bait bucket with some live bait. That should work for a while. I don't have kids but I entertained a 1 and 2 year old yesterday for 15 minutes with a golf ball as a prop. Maybe try a live chicken or a box of earthworms too.
