Jose 580 Amber and I love them, but just got a freaking scratch in one lens right in my vision so I may need a new pair. Any other good frame suggestions for a relatively narrow face?

Ccolley,

How old are you? The technology was made early in the 20th century and Ray Ban mass produced polarized glasses beginning in the late 1930's.

Pretty sure Costa has discontinued the 400 lens. I could be wrong, but 400 hasn't been listed on their website for a while and retailers don't have them.
Your options now appear to be polarized glass (580G) or polarized plastic (580P)
This is a much simpler line up in my opinion and a good move by Costa.
I've had both.
The plastic is cheaper, lighter weight, and impact resistant, but scratches easier.
The Glass doesn't scratch, but will shatter, and it fogs easier but clarity is by far the best.
I prefer glass but I wouldn't knock plastic...especially if you want to save a buck.

I have two pairs of fathoms 400G blue mirror. That way when I have to send them off for repair every couple of years I have a new pair ready to go. I've worn several other brands and Costa has been the only ones I can wear for 12+ hours a day without even realizing I have them on. Extremely comfy. I get annoyed about the ear pieces getting loose after a year or so, but they hold up with daily use for me for about 2- 2 1/2 years.

My favorite fishing/offshore/outdoors pair:
Permit Tortoise , Blue Mirror 580g
After that...I have an addiction
Tern Tortoise grey 580p
Havana Tortoise green mirror 580g
Caballito Crystal Blue 580p
Hammerhead white blue mirror 580p
Tropic Star in Camo
Maya Black in 580p blue mirror
Fantail white blue mirror 580p
Playa in a funky blue green fade grey 580p
Cortez Crystal gold 580p amber mirror
Once I started wearing eye contacts at age 40, I realized regular Costas are cheaper than owning one pair of mirrored prescription polarized sunglasses.... So I guess I'm making up for having one pair of sunglasses for 20 years...
Steepandcheap... Thanks for the heads-up!

Not really. They are kind of the middle of the road in terms of price and quality with other good companies like Smith and Maui Jim. Their marketing is just really really good and they appeal to a lot of sportsman.

As compared to what?

I've worn cheap polarized sunglasses. I've even tried relatively expensive sunglasses that are still polarized and Costas are the best I've ever worn. They're completely worth it and I'll never go back to cheap sunglasses. Ever.

My wife has 2 pairs of Maui Jim aviators from a couple different rewards things at her work. I bought her a pair of Costas for on the water and she'll tell you it's night & day difference and the Costas are significantly better. Almost every professional guide I know wears Costas and the 2 who don't wear equally expensive Smith sunglasses.

Among my friends whom I've convinced to upgrade from cheap sunglasses to quality lenses (doesn't have to be Costas- Ray Ban, Maui Jim, Smith, and even Oakley all make quality glasses though in my experience Costas are the best) the universal response has been, "why didn't I do this before?"

Unlike stuff that goes in a cooler you've only got one set of eyes and they need to be protected. $250 for a quality pair of sunglasses that I wear every day doesn't seem remotely frivolous to me. Pretty asinine statement IMHO.

Sorry, I may have misspoke a little. The technology existed, but the idea of marketing exclusively to fisherman was a new idea. Polarization was initially used in sunglasses in the late 30's for Ray-Ban aviators for WWI pilots. They were permitted to take them home. Widespread sunglass use didn't come into play until the late 70's, Costa began in the mid 80's, it was late 80's - early 90's when we were buying their originals at the offshore tournaments.

If you send them on a Monday you should only miss one weekend. I've gotten mine back within two weeks every time.

I've still got the first pair of Costas I ever bought circa '98 or so. I got them on clearance from The Sports Authority so they were probably a discontinued style then. Black frames and actually spells out "Costa del Mar" in gold lettering on the side, this was pre-wave branding. They look sorta like Ray-Ban Wayfarers- called the Euro.

In fact, to find a picture online I had to do a GIS for "vintage Costa del Mar sunglasses" and still couldn't find the exact ones. These are a later model called the Euro+ that are extremely similar.

They make a frame style for someone with a big pollack block head and one ear a bit lower than the other? ( I need to be able to permanently bend them a bit so they fit right.)

Also, must fit very securely so I can wear them in the surf.

I've had Maui Jims and there's no comparison. The Costas are way better. I've even had a Maui Jim salesman acknowledge the fact. He started to pitch his glasses to me and complimented me on my Costas. I told him thanks but I prefer my Costas. He said, "Yeah, I get that a lot."

Could I send them back to Costa, sure but fishing season has already started and I don't want to loose them for a month. I've had these less than a year

Costa is really good at replacing issues/defects under their warranty.

I have sent my glasses in 4 times in 6 years and every time they have been replaced. For something like you mentioned, they will probably fix no questions asked.

For other issues (like broken frames for example), it's important to explain that you feel there was a defect in the glasses. I always explain the exact situation and how it happened and they have replaced them every time. They sent me a brand new pair in two instances.

Am I the only person who has never been able to keep good sunglasses without losing them or horribly scratching them? I just cannot justify man.
