I just figured you slack jaws would appreciate it.

when you get the fire going to quickly, you waste prime beer drinking time

I have three kids and a long commute. there is no beer drinking time on weeknights. unless i'm mowing.

grill enough on the weekend to last all week, re-heat in the microwave on half power so it doesn't get rubbery, you're welcome in advance

Shouldn't you be Dentite-ing?

My solution on the BGE is 1.5 paper towels, pour some vegetable oil on it, cover with charcoal, spray down with 90% rubbing alcohol, add match, grab beer.

+1 on directly lighting with a Mapp Torch.... it's quick

My son wants me to go to the Eggfest with him on April 30th. No telling what cool thing I will blow money on this year.

My biggest reasons for wanting to make this are:

1) I wanted to find a use for all the small bits that fall through the bottom grate, other than just the trash. I made a sifter from a bucket and some square metal mesh. I just scoop the stuff out, drop it in the bucket, give a few shakes over the trash to let all the powder and small ash fall out the bottom, and pour the remaining chunks into a container I use to feed this starter.

2) I didn't want to use any of the 'approved' fire starters (compressed wood fibers with wax or whatever they use) as they seem to just smoke like crazy.

3) I wanted to minimize the amount of MAPP and/or propane because I have munchkins and I don't want to just stand there.

4) Speed. I use the grill at least two days out of the week, on the low end. Even though I have to wait about 2.5 min for a batch of hot starter coals, spreading them out like I do, I can get a uniformly hot grill in about 7-9 min. I have several more little box fans like the one in the video, and I'm contemplating building a mount for it on the bottom vent to see if I could shave even more time off. I eventually would like a Flame Boss or CyberQ or equivalent, as it would be essentially the same thing but with the added benefit of temperature monitoring.

I understand the beer argument, but with these hooligans, there is no 'me' time. And I wouldn't trade it for anything.

I like the Aggie engineering involved in that, but I have a little dewalt shop vac that I can put the hose on the out flow to make it a blower. I light with a mapp torch in one spot, and use the blower to spread the flame around. Last night I had it up to 500 deg in about 15 minutes.

I have a digi Q, and while it will bring the egg up to temp without help, It is very slow. I guess that's on purpose, so that it doesn't over shoot. I usually get it to temp first, then put the fan on.

Side note: That dewalt shop vac is awesome! it will Run on their 18 or 20 volt batteries, and will also plug into the wall. I rarely do a project in the house that I don't have it by my side. Then I can just clean as I go!

Maybe when this product takes off you will enjoy enough commercial success to buy a new pair of pants.

three kids and a long commute is exactly why i make beer drinking time on weeknights.

You know, if you could figure out how to attach that fan directly to the grille, then you could maybe throw in a temperature sensor and an automatic control and sell if for 500% profit.

That's pretty awesome, especially if you just had all of that stuff lying around the house.

All but the actual chimney piece. It was 3 or 4 dollars.

I like the ingenuity, even though I disapprove of cutting up the gas can for it. You probably could have sold that thing at an antique shop for $50 or more.

See, but now grandma's gas can has more than $50 use to me. It's won't have to live the rest of its days on the wall at a Razzoos.

Hahaha. That's a photo of me showcasing Grandpa Fisher's garb from when he was a scribe in Austin at my grandparent's 50th Wedding Anniversary.

I knew that would come back to bite me someday.

Sucks ass...I had it and it sits in the outdoor bin. MAPP torch FTW.

While I appreciate the ingenuity, putting a white hot can of fire on a plastic bucket and next to a straw broom has "We was Aggies" written all over it.

I love mine. Got a full bag of charcoal ripping hot on Sunday in under 15 minutes.

This is what my friend uses. Start at 4 minutes in.

I recently bought one of these HF torches. To kill weeks in my rocked-over areas. I think its going to be a lot of fun. But my chimney firestarter works so well, I probably won't bother to use it to start charcoal. To start my charcoal I use cardboard and keep feeding it into the bottom. It just take maybe 4 minutes.
