I have a 2007 Evinrude E-tec 200hp with only 236 hrs on it. Long story short, port got clogged up and burned up a cylinder.

Repair and salvage estimate are around $6,000

Should I get it repaired and if so who do y'all recommend. I live in Brenham but willing to drive to Houston/ Austin/ Victoria for a good trusted mechanic.

Or salvage and buy new one.

Thanks in advance

FWIW my Yamaha 200 SHO cost $16,500 + tax&little. For a 10K difference, I'd probably lean towards repair unless they will give you a significant trade in value on the broken motor.

Should have told yall, if I get $6,000 for motor I have another $4,000 to put down. So around 7K for new motor.

So the dilemma is $2,000 to rebuild (don't know if I trust a rebuilt motor)

OR

$7,000 for new motor.

Let me make sure I have this right

Option 1: $2,000 to fix your existing motor
Option 2: Trade in existing motor + $4,000 cash + finance $7,000 for a new motor

If that is correct, I'd still lean towards a repair. Damn near every guide I know is running a motor that has been rebuilt at least once if not more often. Unless this is a known common problem with the '07 Evinrude you're $11,000 ahead and you have a motor with very low hours.

Other considerations are what is the year and make of the boat? I helped my father in law sell a re-powered boat last year. The new motor did very little to drive the price up. If you are going to keep the boat another 10 years that may not be a big deal, however, if you are selling the boat, having a new motor on an old hull is a bonus for the buyer, but, may be hard to recover the money you invested.

I have never owned an E-tec, but the four people I know with one have all had hell with the motor quite a bit.

dba- Boat Is 06 but is tip top shape. Keeping it until it sinks. Thinking now rebuilding is way to go.

Dirty- don't want rewire for different brand of motor so sticking with Evinrude for now.

Thanks for your input.

rebuild the motor. As long as its done by a decent mechanic, you should have no problems.

Lots of rebuilds out on the water with no issues at all.

if you're going to keep forever I would upgrade while it makes some sense. I bet you can sell your broken rig on craigslist.

Rebuild. When I rebuilt mine, they extended the warranty on the rebuild for an extra year if I replaced the oiler for a few hundred bucks more. Seemed like good insurance.
