CanyonAg,

No, I am speaking of the monument at the actual site. I believe it was erected in the 1930s.
Very cool. I had no idea there was one out there. Is it straight north from the 1936 historical marker, or is the marker on the highway not in the right place?

EDIT: Found a photo of the monument you saw. Still don't know where it is exactly.

Shot at a ram first, but lost sight of it and couldn't find it, even though I think I hit it. Couldn't find any sign, other than tracks. Shot at another ram, and I am pretty sure I hit it as well, but again, couldn't find any sign of it. Shot at the ewe third, and found her. Shot the ram in the pics last and on my hike out.

They are very tough animals and can soak up a lot of lead. Even if you hit them well, they might run for a long distance and not bleed much.

So are you an aoudad Hunter now or was this just a one time thing?

Ever shot one with a 338? Or something like a 300 WSM?

Curious to how they'd deal with that. Although, I'm pretty sure I'd screw everything up from the beginning, but still an awesome hunt man!

Having spent days down in Palo Duro hiking as a kid, I can tell you that this Panhandle boy is pretty impressed that you got a shot at an aoudad. Much less killed two and lived to tell about it.

I want to do it again for sure. It was tons of fun. Just wish there were more inexpensive opportunities for them, since public hunts are hard to draw, and private land, free range hunts are ridiculously expensive.

I really want to hunt aoudad, but the mentioned obstacles kinda take the wind out of my sails.

Why is aoudad hunting not allowed on some of the giant WMAs down by Big Bend? That doesn't make sense to me at all.

Mostly because a.) they are using them for desert bighorn restoration and don't want them accidentally shot, and b.) the TPWD has probably already shot the crap out of them to reduce competition with the bighorns.

Also... rifle hunting and public access scares a lot of folks.

Nice animal, did you keep the meat? I recently shot a free ranging male on my friend's (26 Power) lease in Medina. I smoked a section of the backstrap yesterday and although a bit chewy, was really good. No gamey taste at all. I am going to dry age some for a week or so in the beer fridge to see if that helps with the chew. I'm turning the shoulders and hams into sausage.

Thanks for replying. I figured I was missing something. Guess I need to start applying.

Great write up. I have 17 points in several categories including exotic. I wish they would fix the drawing system.
