How long do you want to ignore this user?
Guys,

I've decided to purchase a suppressor. I have an NFA trust set up and the calibers I'd like to use the suppressor on are .308, .223/.556, .40SW, and .45ACP.

I've decided on the SilencerCo Hybrid.

I have some very basic questions as I've never used a suppressor and have no idea how they work.

Are there adapters I'll need to buy to fit these various calibers?
Will I now need to buy new threaded barrels for all of my guns?

Thanks

plowboy,

Did I ask some stupid questions?

Simply put if you want to attach a suppressor to your firearm you need a threaded barrel at a minimum. If you have a quick disconnect suppressor you will need an additional muzzle device that would replace the traditional flash hider on an AR-15 or muzzle brake on any other rifle.

Additionally some of those calibers will have different thread profiles requiring some type of adapter that it looks like SilencerCo may provide at an extra cost.

No stupid questions. I think Plowboy was saying he'll be watching this thread because he shares the interest.

Your rifle barrels you just take to the gunsmith and have them thread for the adapter - or thread for direct connect - depending on which option you choose. Depending on ghe pistol you might be able to do a barrel change to a drop in threaded barrel

Online I don't see and adapter or brake attach for ghe hybrid - either way direct. Thread sounds easiest for all the caliber and platform options the hybrid provides

I lie that can - I'm going to have to take a hard look I've been shopping for .458 socom can for multiple calibers pistol & rifle

Also just as an FYI - if you have a hunting rifle with a sporter or lightweight contour you will probably need and adapter attached to the muzzle even if you go with a direct thread can due to the narrow diameter at the muzzle

Oh, man. When does it end? I've just priced out some threaded barrels on Midway for a 1911. Those things are $250 each!

I'd like to use the suppressor on a Dan Wesson Valor (full-size). Any suggestions on a good barrel for this gun that will facilitate a suppressor?

On my Tikka Tactical, the gun already has a Sako muzzle brake on it. I'm assuming that the Sako muzzle brake can simply be unscrewed and replaced with a suppressor? Is it really that simple?

Now, as far as my AR-15. I have a Daniel Defense AR with an 18" barrel. This obviously has a flash hider on it. Any modifications needed for a suppressor to fit this rifle?

Help is much appreciated!

If you have muzzle brakes/flash hiders, you just have to unscrew them and screw on the suppressor assuming your have the same thread pitch. You'll have an problem if trying to use a certain sized suppressors on smaller caliber weapons unless you have adaptors. From SilencerCo's website regarding different thread pitches for certain calibers:

quote:
.22 LR, .22 MAG, .17 HMR
The standard thread for these calibers is 1/2x28. Please let us know if you are aware of any notable exceptions.

9mm

  • 1/2x28 is the most common thread for 9mm weapons both carbine and pistol.
  • H&K weapons use the M13.51xLH thread pitch
  • Sig Sauer weapons use the M13.5x1LH thread pitch

.40 S&W

  • 9/16x24 is the most common thread pitch for .40 cal weapons.
  • H&K weapons use the M14.51xLH thread pitch

.45

  • .57828 is the most common thread for .45 cal weapons.
  • H&K USP Tactical uses the M16x1 LH thread pitch
  • H&K Mark 23 (Socom) uses the M16x1 RH thread pitch

5.56mm (.223)

  • AR-15s use the 1/2x28 thread pitch
  • Steyr Aug uses the M13x1 LH thread pitch
  • H&K weapons use the M15x1 thread pitch
  • Ruger Mini uses 9/1624 thread pitch

7.62mm (.308)

  • 5/8x24 is the most common thread for 7.62mm/.308 weapons
  • Sako TRG uses the M18x1 thread pitch
  • Accuracy International uses the M18x1.5 thread pitch
  • AK-47s use the M14x1LH thread pitch
.338LM

  • 5/8x24 is the most common thread for .338LM weapons
  • Sako TRG uses the M18x1 thread pitch
  • Accuracy International uses the M18x1.5 thread pitch
  • Desert Tactical Arms uses the 3/424 thread pitch

I don't have a barrel recommendation for you, however I do know that Dan Wesson barrels are not GI-spec. So, I don't believe any old "drop in" threaded 1911 barrel will work. Make sure you do some research on this one.

For the Tikka - the answer is that it depends on the thread profile of the barrel. If the threads are standard .308 threads (5/8x24), it should be as simple as having the proper adapter for your can. Removal could be tricky, depending if your muzzle brake is pinned and welded or not. If it's pinned and welded, it can be tricky to remove the muzzle device without damaging the threads. It can be done, but I'd let a gunsmith tackle that.

For your AR-15 - You will need to remove the flash hider without damaging the threads. 1/2x28 is the "standard" .223 thread profile, which is what your DD should be. Same as the Tikka, I'd let a gunsmith remove the flash hider if it's pinned and welded. It's an 18" barrel, so it's probably not pinned and welded. Even if it's not though, it could be Locktite'd on where you would need to heat it up in order to break the connection.

From reading a little about the Silencerco Hybrid, it looks as if you will need to purchase at 1/2x28 direct thread mount for your AR and the proper piston mount for whichever .45 ACP barrel you decide on for your Dan Wesson. Your suppressor will come with a 5/8x24 direct thread mount included, which will be for your Tikka if it has standard .308 threads. Those three mounts will be what you change out in the bottom of your suppressor in order to allow it to thread onto your different weapons.

Edit - AR barrel is already threaded. Duh. Also edited to add a few more bits of info.

It looks like the suppressor system functions similar to the Osprey with an internal piston that can be swapped for different thread profiles. I can run my Osprey on a .45 pistol or a .40 pistol by swapping the piston to match the threads.

Cave, that is good information. Thank you.

My Tikka muzzle brake is not pinned. It is simply screwed on and has a lug nut to tighten. Removing it is simple.

Not at all, just replied since this is of interest to me as well.

I have a Browning A-Bolt .270 with a BOSS. Does anyone know if a suppressor would fit the same threads as the BOSS? I love that gun and can drive nails with it, but if you're not wearing hearing protection then you will blow your eardrums out.

Posting an update to my above question. I emailed Capitol Armory yesterday and received a reply from Torrey within an hour. He said that my rifle would accept a direct thread suppressor in place of the BOSS but not a quick detach due to the thread length. The BOSS uses a 9/16x24 and would need a direct thread adapter to make it work. I think I'm going to purchase the Silencerco Omega .30 can for my .270 and will also work on the .300 win mag I plan on purchasing in the future

DW has made a new suppressor-ready 1911.
