One of the worst creations under the good Lords earth are those nasty little critters YET...
We all know the RULES...
Does anyone have an edible BEP recipe that is more than just completely hide the vile things in salsa or dilute them 8937539753 to 1 in real food ???

There's one on the tine board.
I think it's titled "spadilly's black eye peas" or something.

I think there's one on the outdoor board as well.

Edit: this board. I thought I was on the Aggieland board.

The only way I eat black eye peas is the HEB recipe called Texas Caviar.

Off the top of my head recipe...

2 cans peas (drain)
1 TBLS HEB house season
1 pint pico de gallo
1 jar HEB roasted Red Pepper jelly stuff

Mix. Refrigerate. Eat with tortilla scoop chips.

Mild. You can use mild, medium, or hot pico to adjust temp as you like. Add as much jalapeo too. Some in my house don't like spicy foods and they all love this one. I like it because it takes 15 seconds to make...

This.... we treat Black Eyed Peas similar to Pinto Beans..... lots of Bacon, maybe ham, definitely some onion, and a few spices.

how on earth can someone not like Black Eyed Peas?

Those suckers cooked with a ham bone and eaten with sport peppers in Vinegar may be one of the best meals around.

Don't cook from a can, cook from frozen. I substitute purple hulled peas, but if you feel black eyed is the only variety acceptable, still buy frozen.

I cook diced bacon, then add add the water and peas, some minor spices and let them go. Love the earthy flavor. Gonna try the peppers and vinegar, sounds awesome.

When I was growing up the only beans I liked were green beans. I've grown to like pintos and red beans, but black Eyed Peas taste like what I imagine dirt would taste like. I always eat a few on new years, but I wouldn't say I enjoy them. The way I dislike the least is cooked with a ham bone.

Bacon, bacon, and more bacon.

Here is what I do and everyone loves them.

4 strips bacon sliced up
1 medium yellow onion
1 jalapeo
2 bags frozen peas
2-3 cloves garlic minced
Salt and pepper to taste
Pickapeppa sauce to taste

I cook the bacon and reserve the pieces. I then cook the onion in the bacon grease until translucent. Add the garlic for about 1-2 minutes. I then add in the peas and coat them in the grease and cook for about 1-2 minutes. Add the bacon back and add whole jalapeo. Cover with water plus about an inch. This is when I will also add the pickapeppa sauce. I would guess I use able 1-2 TBS. As they get soft, I will start tasting for seasoning and adjust as needed. You might also need to add liquid as you go. If you have not tasted pickapeppa it tastes like A1, so I guess you could substitute. They are always a hit.

I usually eat purple hull field peas instead.

I can't tell that much difference, though.

Since i despise black eyed peas, i refuse to eat them. Not sure where the tradition of eating them in NYD came from, but it is not a tradition in the schmellb99 household.

I shall make gumbo jnstead. Much better and brings just as much good luck.

As the Yankees looted through the Old South towards the end of the Civil War - the fields of black eyed peas weren't torn up as they thought they were food for cattle and slaves. The black eyed pea rose in prominence because there was little left to eat. Fixed right, they are damn hard to beat.

I don't like black eyes, but they are probably the most bean-like peas. With that in mind, you could go with a very basic pinto recipe to start - soak the peas and then boil them before putting them into a pot (crock or stovetop) with fresh water; a chopped up onion, loads of spices (I'll let you research them), and if you want, a can of rotel.

As for me, I have a pot of chili I'm fixin' to dive into.

I use Pioneer Woman's recipe for black eyes (hoppin johns). I soak my black eyes then saut in butter red, green and yellow bell peppers, onion, garlic, and celery. Then add the black eyes back and use chicken broth/stock to cook in. Add some ham hocks/ shanks and salt and pepper to taste. Also used about 1/2 to 1 teaspoon cayanne pepper. Yummy!

At any given time, I have a couple cans of black eyed peas and collard greens in my work desk. Pop open the can and go to town (I do prefer the greens be heated up first). Dollar General has some pretty tasty canned products.

And don't think I'm joking.

I just made my first ever batch of black eyed peas. I eat them every New Years but I never am the one to cook them. Always my dad or grandparents. I decided to just wing it and try something new myself.

I chopped 6 strips of bacon, chopped up some leftover ham from Xmas, 1 chopped onion. Sauted all that together. 3 cups chicken broth, 3 cups of water, 2 tsp crushed black pepper, 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp red pepper, 1 tsp garlic powder, a splash or 2 of lime juice, few splashes of Frank's Red Hot, and 3 bay leaves.

Best black eyed peas I've ever eaten. By far.

This right here. Also, haven't tried it yet but I bet this man's recipe for the clamato pintos would work damn well for canned black eyed peas.

BTW, you folks hating on black eyed peas need to head back to freakin New England.

Because they suck?

Texture sucks, flavor sucks. Notice the recipes - most have all kinds of other things to actually provide flavor and texture other than mud.
