What was his story? Rip off a design and hope it holds up in court? Did he vacation in China to see the masters of stealing other people's work?

I'm all about competition but blatantly stealing a design and undercutting price isn't anything to admire.
Well if that's the case, I'm sure Engel might have something to say to Yeti........

Yeti isn't costing Engel money by collapsing the margin on the market. Taking market share by a significantly better marketing plan? Yes. RTIC is ditectly attacking the profit margins by low balling the "same product" at a cheaper price. I'd be shocked if they are still around in 12-18 months.

Isn't this one way businesses compete? Does YETI have some inherent right to a high margin? If RTIC is happy at the lower margins, I'm not sure what the problem is.

Not when you are violating someones copyrights. Apparently nobody has had to defend their IP before on this forum.

Well first of all, Engel has been selling their coolers cheaper than Yeti for years, so what you're talking about is a moot point. Yeti's done a damn good job at marketing their product and people are eating it up, so I don't think they're in any threat of loosing market share unless the zombies wake up. There is a market for an injection molded cooler at a lower price point - like myself, I won't buy a Yeti. Engel has been selling it for years under where Yeti is priced at and now RTIC is doing the same. If Yeti wants to try and sustain their margins, great, good for them. They've been successfully doing it so far. I guess they better learn to evolve too.

The simple fact is you talk as if Yeti invented the product and that's not the case. Engel has been making injection molded coolers since the 40's. In fact they invented the injection molded process. So to sit here and try and claim that RTIC is ripping off the design from Yeti is simply false, as Yeti is who started the trend of doing so. And if you really want to get into who's ripping off who, go look at the old Yeti Cycles logo vs. the Yeti cooler logo and tell me who's ripped off who?

Additionally, as a consumer, I could care less about Yeti's profit margin due to the simple fact all they have done is significantly raise the prices of every cooler on the market, including your basic gas station styrofoam, to the point of ridiculousness while gouging people on their product. It's about time someone came in and checked Yeti on what they are doing and brought the market back down to reality.

This is how businesses evolve. As another poster brought up Ford, Henry Ford may not have invented the automobile, but did sure change how they are manufactured. Could you imagine how much you'd be paying for that Ford truck sitting in your driveway today if Chevy and Dodge hadn't come around?

I've actually defended my copyright many times and a cooler design is not going to be a copyright infringement. If they have a valid patent they could try to sue for patent infringement, but it may or may not hold up. Completely different thing.

Meant patent. My bad. Also Yeti is defending their IP since they are suing Rtic.

I expect Yeti to win and RTIC to have to change their latches if they survive. There is a reason every other cooler manuf has avoided the Yeti latch design.

We can argue all we want it doesn't really matter. I won't shell out the money for an Rtic either. Igloo and Polar Bear get the job done enough for me.

I work for an equipment manufacturer. We are the family owned, high end (performance and quality), 100% U.S. Manufactured product in our market. We sell at a higher price than our competitors and still maintain a good market share by providing more value in quality, performance, and service. We can afford all that because of a higher margin. We defend our patents aggressively as well.
I don't spend money on high end coolers, but in my eyes, if RTIC is making an equal or better coolers and can make money with lower margins, good for them. If they are stealing a design that wasn't covered or being properly defended, bad on Yeti. If they are, then I hope Yeti puts them out of business in court. Patent infringement is stealing.
If Yeti wants to maintain their high price without bringing more value to the customer, they won't sustain their market share against the competition forever-like others have said, it's a free market.

Exactly. I'm not raging against competition. I just wanted to hear the RTIC story. Anything other than an attempt to copy Yeti as close as possible and hopefully have it hold up in court is a lie.

There are tons of luxury cooler options. Pelican, Engel, Frio, Bison, Kodi, etc but none have blatantly gone after Yeti's patents in such a direct and shady way.

Reward the behavior if you want, having been on the other side of it I think its chicken****.

My 20Qt RTIC isn't bad. It's nowhere near what my 50 quart yeti will hold, but it's much easier to carry and is good for a couple of six packs at least.
