I am in the research phase of getting a hunting dog and after talking to a bunch of people and reading a lot I think I want a GSP.

Am wondering if any of you guys have any experience or recommendations for breeders that I can start researching or talking to.

Like I said, she is going to be a hunting dog, and everyone seems to say bloodlines are very important and I don't imagine that's an exaggeration. So preferably something with good bloodlines? From what I understand this can get a little pricey but I'm interested in finding out just how pricey.

Thoughts?

I'd start with TGR gundogs in Bullard, TX. Rob Martin is a good Ag and his dogs are incredible

My brother got his GSP in 2012 from Tom Bowman at Shorthair Ranch. She has been a great bird and family dog. I've personally hunt with her for dove, duck, pheasant and quail and watched her out perform some pretty high end GSPs.

I have two from wild rose and cannot say enough good things about them. Several others on here do as well and will probably chime in. Ours have not been on a lot of birds, due to the lack thereof, but are awesome around the kids and in the house.

Wild rose. Our 14 year old female is still running like a dog half her age. She was more along the field trial lines so she's never been calm, but a hell of a dog

How do GSP's do with small kids? My boys are 2 and 4. We are really considering a dog soon and I love GSP's.

The breed is fine around kids.

If raised responsibly, they pose absolutely no threat to kids but they aren't the best playmates because they would rather be exploring, chasing bugs etc. They keep to themselves if they have access to a big yard -- always watching for birds.

My dog is usually too busy to be bothered by people. He likes to be petted but mostly in the evenings when things are winding down.

My dogs love kids.

Agree with cactus. We got our oldest four years ago when my boys were 5 and 7 and never had an issue. They are either on patrol in the back yard or curled up on their bed inside in the evening.

Thanks for the info guys. I reached out to wild Rose and TGR gundogs for more info. Just out of curiosity, what's the cause for large price differences? Wild Rose and TGR Gundogs seem to be in the 6-700 dollar range but Classic Gun Dogs is in the 1500 plus range. Is there a real difference in quality?

My GSP has grown up with my kids - she and my youngest are separated by 6 months. The dog considers herself to be one of us. She'd prefer to be in my lap if not out chasing grasshoppers, dragonflies, and mockingbirds. A GSP would do fine.

My brother paid 800 three years ago. Not sure what would warrant such a price jump.
