I went out to Junction this past weekend and was not able to bag an Axis. I wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions for an affordable Axis hunt. Preferable in Central or East Texas.

Thanks,

I did a hunt w/ Dwayne Lowak at Catto Gage ranch on Floorguy's recommendation and I highly highly recommend.

If you're looking for something local, I recommend Mobley Ranch just north of Bryan.

We need to start showing income from our family ranch so it doesn't turn into a "hobby" (form the IRS point of view). I'll push this request up the chain and see if my father is interested. There have been two 34"+ Axis taken off the ranch already this year and there are easily a few more that are ready to be taken.

Please let the OB know if interested... bet you'll have a good bit of interest here. BTW, have gun, will travel...

You've got plenty of takers here if you decide to go that route.

ETA - consider cull hunts as well. Those horns taste terrible.

Where did you go. I hunt a place called Keith johns. Bow only. Buddy got an axis doe over a four day hunt. Didn't see any bucks close enough though. It's located in junction.

I went to JD Whitetails. Saw a buck about 34" but couldn't get a shot off with all of the brush. I shot a 33" last year. He's got some big ones but they just weren't moving much this weekend.

I had struck out all season last year and posted on here looking for any day hunt close to San Antonio just to have something in the freezer. An Ag on here ( I don't recall his name/login) was on a lease north of Boerne The land owner allowed the guys on the lease to bring guests on for $100 kill fee on does to help defer the lease costs. We got in the stand and at sunrise had 30 axis doe at 100 yards eating at the feeder. We had the doe quartered in my cooler and I was on the way home by 0900. Maybe if he still posts on here he can help you out.

I remember something like that. If that's available, again this year. I am in.

I honestly thought this post was going to be about that guy who always posts the hunt on craigslist.

here

Not sure if he's legit or not, but just search "axis hunt" on cl and he'll pop up..... a lot.

I will second the motion to PPAg, if you need some culls taken for a reasonable price i'm down. My freezer is way too empty.

Sorry, didn't mean to blow this thread up. He wants to discuss further but I sincerely doubt he'll be wanting to move fast enough to get anything in the next few months. If he goes down this path we're probably looking at the Spring/Summer bucks and not the Fall/Winter bucks.

Anybody with experience want to take this one? Based on looks alone the felt is similar to WT.

They don't all fall under the same rut, gestational periods like whitetail, meaning axis are born year round and some shed antlers in the spring and velvet late summer/early fall like whitetail and others will shed in the fall and velvet in the spring/summer.

It all depends on when they were born. Is that what your asking?
