i'm new to my BGE. Was wondering what everyone uses.

I've gone through one bad of BGE, royal oak and I'm using B&B right now.

The royal oak seems to burn really fast. I've read that royal oak makes the BGE brand.

I like the HEB central market stuff. I don't think it's any more expensive than the rest. Frankly, I don't think one is better than the other. Charcoal is charcoal.

Royal Oak. You can get it at Walmart or HEB. I have tried the CM stuff and B&B but I found both to be very sparky and both left tons of ash residue. B&B also had crap like fence board material in it. You could tell because it was uncharred wood and it had nails still in it.

Lump burns hotter and longer than briquettes to me.

Use lump, briquettes have chemicals used to bind the stuff together

I use Krogers house brand. I read somewhere on the internet-so obviously true-that it was royal oak. The only difference i could tell was the size of the chunks. I try to seperate it and use the really small peices on short cooks

Royal Oak also makes the BGE branded charcoal.

B&B oak is my favorite. I seem to get better smoke flavor from it than I did with Royal Oak, plus I like the bigger chunks.

I usually use Royal Oak, but the Kroger stuff works well. Never liked B&B.

Wicked Good Charcoal 22 Lbs Hardwood Lump Coal is pretty good stuff. Can be found at ACE Hardware.

I also second the Royal Oak as well.

+1 for Wicked Good. Usually has some giant chunks good for low and slows. I loved Ozark Oak, but they got bought out and currently isnt sold anymore. Heard good stuff about Rockwood if you can find it.

Isn't Wicked Good a bit pricey?

My local ACE has a 22 pound bag for $19.95. It's well worth the cost. Burn very nice in my BGE.

I only use HEB brand, good mix of large and small chunks.

I started out using the HEB brand and then switched to the B&B Mesquite. Now I'm working down a huge bag of Cowboy Brand that I picked up at Costco. It was a good buy but I don't think I like it as much as either the B&B or HEB brand. Not as many big chunks and lots of little pieces. I need to try Royal Oak but B&B and the HEB stuff seemed to work pretty good for me.

If you are looking at different brands, go to Naked Whiz and check out the lump reviews. They have tons of them, as well as lots of recipes and other info. And yes, it is completely SFW

I like the HEB central market brand as well though I would stay away from their generic brand. I prefer the larger chunks as they allow for better air flow with my cyberq wifi.

I have been using the Cowboy from Costco as well. Works just fine in my XL BGE.

Have always used B&B...5 years now. Only issue is all the small crap at the bottom. Friend of mine pours the bag out and throws the smaller stuff away. Rocks are an occasional issue as well.
