Both of you are sort of right... But remember that Palma rifles are very specialized tools and what they do wont work for regular folks with factory ammo.

US Army SSgt Brandon Green is a close personal friend of mine. I will save you the Google clicks: http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/2014/05/ssg-brandon-green-sets-stunning-500-33x-nmc-national-record/

Talked to him this morning about this thread. Palma rifles typically wear 30 or 32 inch barrels. They want every last bit of velocity that they can get to fight the wind. But for those barrels to work, they use handloads of very slow burning powder that you would normally never see in a .308 case. Contours are full on the barrels, but the last two inches are turned down to 750 to mount the required front sight.

FYI...Brandon loves Texas A&M, and Kyle Field, and I get him down here every a Fall to conduct a long range class with the CCMU.

Some of the extreme wildcatters will also use a 30" stick. These are definitely outliers though. Once you start using bmg, cheytac, and 338 lapua brass to neck down because 300 rum is too small...

Buy random Czech military Mauser 98 sporterized in .308 at pawn shop, complete with Weaver K4. Learn Kentucky windage. You'll have about $700 left over.

Used to love shooting this setup out at the Whittington Center.

I am late to the thread but another suggestion:

Rem 700 Varmint in 243, 9 twist and with the 26" barrel stabilizing 105 Amax's is a given. Grab a Leupold VX2 3x9 CDS and a set of Talley Lightweights and you are good to go well beyond 500 and at that weight, you may see the bullet hits. If you don't reload there are plenty of factory choices and this should get you in at a grand.

Personally I don't care for heavy guns, I have done the same with the Academy 279.00 ADL and a VX3 3.5x10, recoil is low to me and it's a ton of fun between 400-600. Probably get you in around 750.00 or better if you can get the ADL on sale.
