Anybody else watching this John Joe Gray story on NatGeo? I am sure the producers are juicing up the story for tv, but it is still a pretty wild story. Gray's wiki has a quote from the law saying they have no plans to invade because ten grays aren't worth one of his officers. Not sure it was worth a full hour of my life, but still interesting. I am posting in hopes someone on the board has some insight on this dude.

I know sheriff Nutt fairly well... saw him in my business this morning. He's a solid guy (retired ranger) and probably right about Gray not being worth losing LEOs over - at least IMO. Gray's place ain't too awful far from me... he's a nut job, but stays holed up in Trinidad where I suppose he'll die.

I watched. The paranoia they have about what will happen if they go outside the "compound" was sad and funny and the same time.

Did bother me that they kept referring to Gun Barrel City as where they live....I guess that sounds better for TV than Trinidad.

Yeah... I didn't watch the program but I remember when that deal started. Been well over 10 years IIRC. I don't think Sheriff Nutt was even in office then... seems like it was Brownlow maybe. Anyway, best I remember, they surrounded the place and opted not to do much more than that after negotiations to get them to surrender failed. Seems like there was quiet a standoff at that time (maybe even shots fired, but I honestly can't remember... been too long ago).

Unless it's changed recently, there's still federal (I think) LEOs stationed at points of ingress and egress to the property and basic 24 hour surveillance.

And you're right, Gray's place definitely ain't in Gun Barrel... it's a good 20+ miles from there.

They let the neighbor kids in to play. I seriously feel bad for the kids there.

I watched this show last night, and the whole thing made me sad for humanity. I only came in about 30 minutes into it though.

The other thing that made me sad was the fact that there are law offices out there that are so slow that people like this are considered outlaws worth exhausting time on.

I kind of found the whole thing a bit gimmicky.
