I am looking for some advice from a good Aggie agronomist. I have a fence line on my property that I want to clean up. I can shred right up to the fence from inside but there is a ditch on the outside and so it is too narrow for my tractor and shredder. I therefore need to spray a herbicide to kill these vines and other grasses and weeds.

Is there anything that will kill this and anything else wiht one application? I have used Remedy for woody plants like this but with only limited success. I want something that I can spray and it will kill EVERYTHING along the fence line.

Below are some pics of the vine. I believe this is a pretty common vine.

That is greenbriar, you can cut it off and treat with glyphosate and you will also want to spray any that re sprout from the roots in 1-2 weeks.

Here's a recommended plan from Extension:

Greenbriar control

Best control in winter.

Any part that is fairly tender is edible, and not that bad.

That is a great guide AgResearch. I can try a treatment of Remedy and diesel. I am a bit surprised that diesel is recommended althougth I have no issue whatsoever using it.

Could you provide me with the same guide for common Yaupon? I searched on that Callahan site but could not find out.

Remedy + Diesel is pretty effective for the tough to kill weeds/plants on range/pasture/noncrop lands.

Diesel and remedy is like magic, but remember on some species to give it time. The cut stump method works good on yaupon.

To add on to ursus, the tuber is good for thickening soups and the berries are also edible. It's a native, don't be so upset about it.

I'm going to upset the applecart here, but I am not a fan of Remedy and diesel as a foliar mix. The diesel has too big an impact on leaves and tends to burn them before the herbicide has a chance to absorb and move. I am more a fan of Roundup and a kicker (any broadleaf herbicide) and plenty of surfactant to penetrate that waxy coating (which diesel does to an extreme). Remedy and diesel cannot be beat as a cut stump or stem treatment, but it simply pisses off plants as a leaf treatment.

I think my problem is that I have been spraying a Remedy/diesel mixture on the leaves themselves as opposed to the base of the tree as recommended. This is actually much better as I can use much less product versus trying to coat the entire tree/bush.

I don't use diesel either, but Roundup does not seem strong enough to get rid of my sticker vines (that's what I call the vines in the OP). I use roundup mixed with water and dish soap. The dish soap works fine as a surfactant for my purposes.

That being said, I have to spray the huisache or mesquite (I can never tell them apart) 2 - 5 times with this mixture to get all of it. Maybe adding the diesel would help? I worry about getting too much diesel on the ground though.

if your spraying a shrub or tree try a hack and squirt method, I try to hack fairly close 18-30" from the base of the truck and apply a good amount of mixture. I have always used diesel and remedy as well as a few other commercial grade applicants. As a surfactant diesel or dish soap " no water or very little" work though it seems that diesel works the best. Pouring used motor oil along your fence line is a sure way to keep the vines, trees and shrubs off the fence; I am not saying that I do this or that I don't I am just stating that I know that it works.

Huisache should be sprayed with a 25% remedy 75% diesel mixture from the base of the trunk up about 12 inches completely around. Spray until saturated, but not running off. Leave the tree. Do not shred it for at least a year, they will cause huisache to regrow. In fact shredding is the worst thing to do to huisache. Sendero is a more expensive option.

Getting rid of the brush and letting the grass grow is the best non-chemical brush preventative, and it costs $0. Spraying Roundup and killing the grass just encourages more weeds and brush to come back.

1% sendero is excellent on mesquite foliarly

Surmount is a good option on foliar huisache

Remedy diesel is basal bark or cut stump ONLY. Don't get on foliage

Great info. My place isn't big enough for a commercial application and I don't have an commercial permit, so I am a user of the retail Round Up and have had some success with that approach already mentioned. Just never thought of using it in winter. But I have a bigger problem with Jerusalem Cherry(nightshade) along my fence lines and under my oak trees. I know there are products, that will kill it (glyphos) but I am afraid of killing the trees since those products move through the soil if I remember correctly. Need a contact recipe if ya'll have one. I will be using a pump sprayer in this application. Thanks, guys.

Glyphosate is completely safe in soil. Must be taken up in the foliage. It is broken down by microbes very rapidly in the soil.

Is there a Merit Badge for foliar application ? If so, my GS may have an opportunity also.

Does any of this work for bamboo in central Texas where we live in the aquifer recharge zone?
Tex Aggie
How long do you want to ignore this user?
bamboo is a grass technically

you have to use a super high concentration of glyphosate, and even that is not great. 5%+ v/v

Evidently, roundup works. https://www.clemson.edu/extension/hgic/pests/weeds/hgic2320.html

Cut it short around this time of year. Wait for leaves and new growth to occur. Hit it with a solid shot of glyphosate (probably around 3oz/gal of 41% glyphosate). Wait 10-14 days and repeat. You can use some dish soap to avoid buying a surfactant.
