After spending the evening at my parents last night with their golden retriever, I decided I would like to own a golden retriever as well.

does any one have any recommendations on breeders? Preferably in the DFW area?

TIA

Just my two cents, a lab/golden mix will look almost the exact same as a pure golden. And you will still have a VERY well mannered dog as well as a great bird dog. Plus they're cheaper than a pure bred.

I might be interested, do you have a breeder in mind that does that?

I have always grown up with Goldens, Valentine is our family's fourth golden retriever.

Ha. No, sorry. Picked mine up on CL for $150. Would say just keep your eyes open. Tis the season.

We have two golden's now that are our 3rd and 4th. Numbers 2, 3 and 4 were rescues from one of the organizations below, two from grralliance and 1 from Grnnt. The first we got as a puppy and she was great but cost us a boatload over the years, part of which was due to hip dysplasia. All of our rescue dogs have been great. You might not be able to get a puppy, but you mitigate some of the genetic risk by getting a dog that has grown a bit. Lots of great dogs come through these organizations. Grralliance is easier to work with than the other two.

I would also recommend you consider adopting a Golden or GR mix from one of the rescue groups in the DFW area. We're in the Houston area and years ago adopted a GR named Buck (who quickly became Bucky) from a group here. We just adopted a Golden Pyrenees (GR / Great Pyrenees hybrid) from another GR rescue group. He's a "gentle giant", 90 lbs at 1 year old and that's after he had spent some time on the street. Very good family dog, took to our 15 month old grandson immediately and getting along fine with our English Shepherd. This is not our boy but he looks quite like this one:

All our dogs acquired in the last 20 years have been rescues of some sort. It's a satisfying feeling knowing that you are helping out a dog in need of a home, costs significantly less than a buying from a breeder, you typically have some idea of their health/behavioral issues (if any) and maybe it's just our perception but at least with the dogs we've adopted it seems like they are really appreciative of being rescued. We go for young dogs that are mostly through the puppy stage and house broken.

My daughter is trying to talk me into getting one right now as well. We live in Columbus, MS and they just had a momma that was surrended and she was pregnant with 8 full blood goldens. They are adorable. We are trying to decide between a boy or girl. They are $60 for the adoption fee and come fixed and with shots. The puppies are 5 weeks old now.

Depending on what you are looking to do with your pup, here are a few options of vetted DFW golden breeders. I know a few of these breeders from this list personally, but I think most of them (not all) are show lines as compared to field lines.

Here are a couple of links for good field golden breeders in DFW with generation after generation of solid hunting/hunt test/field trial dogs:

Another good resource for you to know about is http://www.k9data.com which will allow you to look up the dogs mentioned in a posted breeding that you find out about to research their full pedigree and what type of titles the dogs in it have (can get a sense of field vs. show).

Also, if you are interested in adopting check out Golden Retriever Rescue of North Texas. They also have a facebook page and post available dogs all the time. Good group for sure.

If you want to talk more about it I would be happy to answer any questions you have as I just went through the same process a while back - shoot me a PM.

This one looks like the poster took it down but usually they get flagged. Pets are one of the prohibited sales on Craigslist. Anything other than a small 'rehoming fee' is against their policy. CL actually encourages users to 'Flag' posts selling pets, pet parts or stud services.
