Also, if you have time, I recommend stopping by Redfish Lake Lodge outside of Stanley. Live music, great food and its hard to beat the view of the lake against the Sawtooths.
I second this recommendation. Redfish lake is a spectacular setting at the foot of the Sawtooths. It got its name from all of the salmon that used to spawn in it.
That area around Stanley is probably the most scenic in the state of Idaho. If you have time, drive south from Redfish lake about 25 miles on Hwy 75 to Galena summit. There is a scenic viewpoint that looks back north towards Stanley. You get to take in a stunning view of the Sawtooths as they run north towards Stanley. It is scenery that is a 10/10 WB. The headwaters of the Salmon river are right below Galena summit.
Part of the reason that the area around Stanley is so beautiful is that it is in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. The Feds paid the private ranch owners a scenic easement that allowed them to maintain ownership but severely restricts development/building in the area. This isn't the politics board (thank goodness) so I won't debate the concept, but there is no arguing it is a good bit more pretty than it would be with a bunch of condos/miniature golf courses.
