I have a couple of the blue rhino small tanks for my outdoor heater. It seems a though the exchange tank i got last night wasn't filled all the way as it ran out after a few hours. Could i take the tanks to a u-haul or somewhere else and have them refilled? Is it worth it?

Uhaul is usually a very expensive place to go for a refill. I would suggest a propane dealer if it is not too far out of the way. Bbq cylinders are designed to hold 20 pounds of propane. Blue rhino and other exchange cylinders normally have less than that in them....15 or 17 pounds but it should say on the label. At a refill station you will get 20 pounds.

The tare weight for the tank should be stamped into the metal somewhere. Weigh the next tank after the fill up minus the tare wt. If it's not full tell them to make it right, or go somewhere else.

Exchange tanks are about 70% full. No propane tank can be filled past 80% by state law. When you fill a bbq bottle it holds 20lbs of fuel or about 4.7 gallons. They are called 20 lb cylinders in the trade. Take the tare weight and 20lbs and add those together. That's a what a full tank should weigh. There is a float inside the propane cylinder that will not allow more gas in when it hits 80%. These devices should not be relied on to fill as they can have malfunctions and or variations.

You guys know any place close to manchaca and ben white in austin to get a refill (not an exchange)? Also they have a new tank design that sucks. I ended up with the new design a few weeks ago and it went out pretty quickly. the lady at randalls, where i exhange, said people are complaining about the new design and had the same problem as me.

This is ruining my weekly porch party experience! First world problems. Sigh...
