I'm going back offshore next week and I failed to connect with any tuna last time. I think they're mostly blackfins with some others from time to time. Yes, I am casting from the back end of a driling ship, and it has a commercial license so we can fish all we want off tour.

Get some of these in 200 and 300 gram. http://h4ljigs.com/Goober-goob.htm fish them 200-300feet down. If the current is bad fish the 300. If not, the 200 might be enough. Night time is much better. The cudas can wear you out though. NOT working the lure within 100ft of the surface can help reduce the number of cuda cutoffs. Lots of good ways to catch tuna but for a first timer just after blackfin, this will be the most productive.

Jigging can be a lot of work. If you just want to bait fish and cant really catch your own bait then order some of these, hook them through the nose with a 6/0 mustad demon circle hook, stick a toothpick through them just behind the wings to pin the wings open, and drift them out from the ship. http://www.baitmasters.com/store/shopdisplayproducts.asp?id=45&cat=unflyfish Much more likely to catch yellowfin like this and its probably the easiest way of all to tuna fish.

For casting go with the mini-komodo http://www.oceantackle.net/popping.html or Maguroni http://www.oceantackle.net/maguroni-lures.html

About 90 miles south of the tip of the delta. The tunas come up to us at night, will hit baits at the surface even.

Super Spook by itself or a large chugger type bait with a Clowser fly as a trailer.

Always just use silver diamond jigs for the black fin. Catch enough to use as bait/chum for the yellows. Just free line some chunk black fin.

Shibuki or the less expensive maguroni, baby runboh, tuna hunters, diamond jigs, swim baits, and frenzy flying fish

We have a lot of luck with homemade flying fish lures.

Pipe insulation cut to about 6", a bolt for weight, some duck tape to wrap the insulation and make the wings, use some frayed out sash cord as a tail, and attach a J-hook.

Pretty simple process for us, wait for a school of flying fish to come by, toss the line out, hook up to a 60 lb. Yellow Fin. We've got the freezers full from the last few months. It seems like the loop current really brought the Yellow Fin around.

someone on TFF a few years ago was building really nice poppers out of curtain rod, drilled out, with a wire hanger or cable down the center. he carved the mouth and tapered them.
