quote:
WELDON SPRING, Mo. Thousands of venomous brown recluse spiders forced a suburban St. Louis family from their nearly half-million-dollar home.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports Brian and Susan Trost bought the Weldon Spring home in 2007 for $450,000 and discovered the spiders soon after moving in. Susan Trost says the spiders were everywhere, including one she had to dodge as it fell from the ceiling and washed down the drain as she was showering.
The Trosts sued the home's former owners and their insurance company in 2008 and were awarded more than $472,000 in a 2011 civil trial, but they never collected.
The former owners declared bankruptcy and the insurance company refused to pay. The Trosts eventually abandoned the home, which overlooks a country club golf course and now is in foreclosure.

FUUUCK. THAT. SHEET.

I've already had some bad dreams about swarms of hornets after reading a couple of threads on here...oh, I can't wait to go to sleep tonight.

I got bit by a recluse in HS. Do not wish that experience on anyone. Did not sleep for three days and watched a 4" wide hole rot out of my calf over the next 9 months. The cool thing is that now most of the brothers think I got shot so I have instant street cred!

Why in the world would they sue the former owners and how in the world would they win?! Move in to a new house... get an exterminator...

They can crank out a lot of babies, and can go a long time without food.

Seems like you would just tent the house and fumigate as is often done for termites. Just doesn't seem like that complicated a situation to deal with.

At a civil trial in St. Charles County in October 2011, University of Kansas biology professor Jamel Sandidge considered one of the nation's leading brown recluse researchers estimated there were between 4,500 and 6,000 spiders in the home. Making matters worse, he said, those calculations were made in the winter when the spiders are least active.

quote:
She told St. Louis television station KMOV-TV in 2012 the spiders "started bleeding out of the walls," and at least two pest control companies were unable to eradicate the infestation.

If you ever need someone to tent your house and fill it with some sort of poisonous gas for $450,000, let me know.

I would think if you can afford a $450K house then you can also afford to pay for the treatment. If not then you were probably buying well beyond your means when you bought the house.

My grandparents have a house in schulenburg that has developed a similar problem but with scorpions. They have tried everything, nothing puts a dent in them. I see several every time I go over inside the house. Creepy. Unfortunately we have a lot toddler grandchildren now too.

Apparently the house was fumigated for $14,000. Fumigation can cost between $5,000 and $30,000, depending on the size of the home. The house is for sale now for $333,000.

I would like to know what the argument for this being the previous owners fault to award a $470,000. Unless the previous owners and insurance company just did not show up to court.

We have some old 8mm film of my dad tearing the roof off of an old house in West Texas. Everything was cool until he got into a nest of scorpions. Dad did some fancy dancing while swinging a crowbar trying to fend them off. Fortunate that he didn't get stung and/or break something getting off that roof, but that is easily the funniest 5-10 seconds we have in the family film archive...

Since the house was bought in 2007, I wonder if the owners got buyers remorse after the real estate market crashed and their $450,000 house was probably worth $300K by 2008 or 2009. Maybe the spider issue was their angle to try to get out from under their bad real state deal.

Honestly though. How much would that much brown recluse venom be worth?
