Where are good spots to fishing in Port A next week?

Surf
Jetties
Anywhere else?

No boat, no guide. Don't mind wading though.

Thanks!

Without a boat, your wading is pretty limited if you really want to have a chance to catch anything decent. Still a good amount of seaweed to stay out of the surf, best bet may be the jetties.

If you wade Brown and Root Flats early with topwaters or weedless spoons you may come across some reds. This, of course depends on tide levels. They've been low lately and B&R may be a wash.

Jetty is always a possibility. Free lining live shrimp on the channel side mighty yield mangrove snapper. Pretty water at the end of the jetty could mean anything. Smacks, kings, tarpon, etc.

Nightime action on BHP has been good for specks and reds. Not sure how it's been on Caldwell.

Surf is always an option. Again, early.

Good luck.

I would rent a kayak....

How feasible is it to wade B&R without a kayak or boat?

I fish there a lot and I would say not very feasible. If you can get access and get on the road that parallels the Corpus Christi channel and wade in on the south side you might do some good.

Otherwise it's just too far and tough from the north side to get to places that tend to hold fish.

The north side is a much softer bottom to wade....the south side is great.

The road is private I assume?

What about the area around Shamrock cove/Wilson's Cut?
sunchaser
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It's all gated and locked off of 361. On rare occasions I have seen single vehicles on the road but have never seen anyone that was fishing the flats.

I can't answer on Shamrock & Wilson Cut. I have only fished in that area a few times.

With a kayak would you fish LL or B&R? I've never fished from a Yak down there but am now considering it.

I take it the southern end of B&R tends to hold more fish. What about in LL?

You might want to consider the surf. There have been a lot of trout caught in the Galveston area lately and the surf forecast for this week is looking pretty good here.

I see more kayaks in the Lighthouse Lakes.....I see more fish in Brown & Root. As someone mentioned the tides have been very low in the last month. Brown & Root is a little deeper and is going to hold more fish most of the time during lower tides....as will some other places.

From the Kayak Park you can start fishing quickly heading into the LHL and it's normally downwind. B&R is going to be a longer paddle and into the wind....maybe that's why.

In my experience over the years, wading Brown & Root is very feasible.. I've been doing it for years and pulling out a lot of fish for the grill. Check out google maps, park where you are comfortable parking. Walk and wade. As I said earlier, if tides are way low don't bother.

To add more: instead of driving down the road that parallels the CC Ship Channel, veer right and park on a oyster shell high spot or the sand if it's dry. Wade in and parallel the pipeline, as we call it, as you wade It is very visible on Google Eatrh. We always wade the right side of the pipeline and throw across and over it, although you may see nervous water in the area anywhere.

Take pics of your haul and post them up here.

Are you parking on the north side of the sailboat channel and wading to the pipeline?
SanAntoneAg

Parking SE where the pipeline comes into the big white expanse of sand flat. Then wading the pipeline NW to Sailboat, then wading back. Of course the rear end of Sailboat always holds fish.

Thanks for the tips. I'll be fishing the surf for sure. I will also give B&R a try either from a yak or good old foot power. Either way I'll post pics.

SAA....I see what you are doing. I wasn't aware you could get there. The only place I see vehicles is on the very east side of the bridge and they tend to paddle or wade those oyster reefs along the gap that runs south from the bridge.

I can drop NW80 off in that indention about a half mile from the sand point and he will wade a mile plus of that shoreline heading west.......serenity for me.

You can get back in north of Wilson's cut by the blue water tower. There are a couple of spots you can pull in and wade, but I think it will be a bit muddy. Definitely can kayak from there.

If you rent a kayak you will have a lot more options.

First, if you go near the crab man marina between aransas and port A and paddle north across the channel towards the closest duck blind you get into "South Bay" which has potholes to the northwest and a small cut in the northeast corner, all very easily accessible from kayak.

For Wilson's cut, if you go down the road to the SOUTH with a kayak as far as you can go then cross the cut to the north and there are several sets of flats connected by channels. The second flat is the best with potholes to the northwest of the southeast entry point. Check Google Earth. Reds in both of these areas.

If you do not rent a kayak, you can still get to those flats at Wilson's Cut by staying to the RIGHT as you drive in. Go as far as you can which is only a few hundred yards. You then wade and walk down the cut until you are able to enter that area. It will take a while, maybe 30 minutes, but it can be done.

PLEASE be careful for stingrays in that area!

Lastly, I also frequent an area near or similar to SanAntoneAg. Here is a bit more detail. Headed towards Port A from Aransas, turn right into the last road before you get to the ferry. This is the entry into Brown and Root, which I understand you cannot follow the road the way we all used to. If you will CAREFULLY circle the water you can see as you first pull in, you can park on the opposite side of the channel and walk around a perfectly rectangular area called the "football field" for obvious reasons. Once you see that area on Google Earth you will know you are in the right spot. You can continue to walk towards the water to the north-northwest and cross a small channel and get to a shoreline that runs east-west. As you wade there are opportunities for speck and reds, and as you head to the west you will see a rounded inlet with a peninsula extending to the north. That rounded area is deeper and will usually hold fish. There is also usually a white buoy in the middle which is a crab trap. Halfway out on that peninsula is a small sunken boat that holds fish and is worth some time which may be what SanAntoneAg is referring to by "sailboat". If you are particularly adventurous, wade through the shell around the peninsula (carefully with good shoes on) and head west again. There is a large flat, very shallow, but with a gut to the southwest which usually holds flounder and may be worth the effort if you get lucky and they are there. This whole wade extends about a mile or so if you go all the way to the flounder cut. The "Pipeline" I think SAA is referring to is further west I believe and flanks a channel very close to this area, I think around one more island.

If you see any porpoises, just move. They are not your friends when it comes to putting fish in the box.

Again, watch for stingrays and oyster beds and good luck! Post a report if you can.

I second this.. I have caught lots of quality reds right in the area where this poster is describing.. Get there early!!

Sorry, had to edit, had initially put rockport but it is in the causeway between port A and Aransas Pass, same Crab Man Marina though.

Everyone thank you for the hints. I'll be in Port A this weekend. I'll post a full report when I'm done.

If anyone else is going to be down there this weekend feel free to pm me.

Brown and Root was successful. I'll have a full report and pics later when I get to my computer. Thanks for all the help!

Fished in the surf Thursday to Saturday 7/31-8/2. Minimal seaweed the whole time, caught mostly whiting and sand trout. My dad caught a 33" bonnet head shark and had grilled shark for dinner along with a delicious fish fry. All this was near beach access 1a.
