I built a fairly heavily modified OB15. It is a miniature center console bayboat.

I've also built Jemwatercraft's 15 foot SOT sabalo kayak, and Bateau's GF12 jonboat.

There's several plans on the site I think fall near this category of boat:

And yes, it takes a while, but it isn't difficult. Built the entire thing in half of a 2 car suburban garage. It took about a year, and I didn't work on it that consistently. The only tools you really need are a jigsaw and an orbital sander and a drill.

That green FS18 above was built in similar fashion, sort of a cross between a gheenoe and a poling skiff.

You can actually take several of these plans on the site, trim the freeboard down couple inches on lines you like, and install a flat deck on it, and build a custom poling skiff that way, too.

Thanks for the info. Your rig looks sweet!Did you have any kind of hoops to jump through to get it registered?

It is easy to register a homemade boat. You just need receipts for the major materials, and they give it a visual inspection because idiots try to register modified mass production hulls as homemade all the time.

As badass as poling skiffs are I imagine I'll get something like this Pathfinder 2300HPS because of the versatility but then I do have a wife who is OK with having multiple boats.

The Pathfinder is obviously not a poling skiff but will work well in all but the skinniest of water, perfect for chasing tarpon out front, can handle running well off shore in good conditions, and do well as a family boat pulling a tube, etc.

Beautiful Pathfinder. That's an awesome multi purpose boat; I considered them years ago and opted for the JH instead - probably because it most closely resembled the Mowdy I really wanted but didn't have the patience to wait over a year for at the time.

Here's a slick East Cape Caimen that just came up on CL in FLA. Says it's 'impeccable' and I would hope so… since it's priced within just a few thousand of a brand new one (plus the trolling motor and PwrPole) http://tampa.craigslist.org/hil/bod/4598318551.html

Finn, if you get a Pathfinder you gotta get the hard top with the misters in it.

I'm a few years away from the Pathfinder. Right now little man is only 4 and I only need a little skiff. With little man #2 due in a couple weeks it will be another few years before I need a big boat.

Centerpole- just looked at that Caimen link.

No way in hell I'm paying $20K for a $25,000 boat with 450 hours on it.

I'd pay $14K, max.

Ragoo- I believe I've seen that one on another board I frequent and the general consensus seems to be that's an $8-9,000 rig.

agreed. there is a reason it hasn't sold. it has been posted on 2cool before. the age of the engine alone knocks it down.

Ragoo- there's another one of those around town in Houston I've seen pop up several times. IIRC, the guy is asking $7500 or so but according to somebody who looked at it in person they said it was a $3000 rig at best and would need to be refinished.

This guy is selling a Hewes Tailfisher which is very similar to that Pathfinder 17T (all 3 of Maverick, Pathfinder, and Hewes are owned by the same parent corp. these days). Asking $16.9.

I'd pay $15-16K for this rig.

I have seen that one before too. The casting platform is unique.

the thing I don't like about that boat is the gunnels.
Finn Maccumhail

What about them?
Ragoo

they appear to fold and look weak to walk on, probably just perception from a picture.
Finn Maccumhail

AG
Yeah, they don't fold. And what looks like a latch on the port gunnel is actually a pop-up push-pole holder.

Yes Finn, that was my point. I called ECape to price boats and I can't remember if the Caiman was 24, 26, or 28, but it was in that range. A new Lostmen and Fury are priced the same - 34. So for the 4 years of wear on that boat (albeit not a LOT) and difference in price - you get the PP, Trollin' motor, AND at your on the water at least 4 months earlier. I would also wait until spring and fish on my own Caiman before I take that deal too.

Ragoo - those are 'walk around' gunnels so you can move about the boat without stepping down into the boat. Some bots do have the locking rod storage in the walk around gunnels - don't know if that was a feature on Hewes or not.

Lostmen showed up on boat trader over the weekend. http://www.boattrader.com/listing/2010-EAST-CAPE-Lostmen-102315545

Yeah those original Whipray hulls are highly sought after. And considering the guy had it completely redone I'm not surprised it went that high/fast.
