Anybody have experience with constructing and maintaining a natural swimming pool (swimming zone with regeneration zone, no chemicals required) in a single family residential setting? If so, do you like it and what advice would you give?

This is interesting. I've never heard of man made 'natural' swimming pools other than just digging a lake or pond.

Besides cost, what are the cons to this method? Is there a lot of upkeep on keeping the beneficial plants healthy and keeping the pests (weeds/slime/etc) out?

I'm no expert, but I think you would end up with a mosquito breeding ground.

I think they do best when maintained <82 degrees F. Don't think that is possible in Texas.

when i was a kid, i used to dig a hole in the backyard and fill it with water from the hose.

sounds like i was a genius, i wonder what happened.

it is moving water; therefore, mosquitos are not a problem. The temperature question however I'm not sure about.

From what I understand most natural swimming pools feature two connected pools — one for swimming, and a shallow pool to hold plants. The root structures of aquatic plants — cattails, water lilies, and duckweed — remove bacteria and other contaminants.

Also you can use you can use concrete, a synthetic or rubber liner, or bentonite clay for the floor of the pool.

Not gonna lie, I've contemplated this but doing a giant natural pool and stocking it with some fish. Namely some shad, bluegill, and bass.

Combination fishing pond & natural swimming pool FTMFW!

I would love one of these, as long as it didn't turn into a cesspool. Nothing more beautiful than underwater plants covered in oxygen bubbles because they are so healthy.

Sounds great until some "toe biter" water bugs find a home in your tranquil pool.

My parents looked at doing a all Natural but decided on a Lagoon style pool with natural stone with a waterfall. My dad just didn't completely buy the 100% natural would be completely safe from bugs, virus, and bacteria.

Doesn't work so well with labs, I imagine.

There's that British guy on TV shows that does it, and it is very interesting. Most small garden ponds work on this principle, that the plans and the water movement keep the water healthy.

As long as those brain eating amoebas don't take up residence, I'm all for the natural pond approach.

This seems awesome, but I imagine upkeep would be quite the beyotch.

How the hell do you keep plants from getting in the swimming area? Oh and snakes?....

I want to do exactly this except a combo fishing tank and pool. On one end have a shallow pool with pebbles or some hard surface and have that deepen Into a regular tank. I swam in all kinds of nasty **** as a kid.

I suspect this idea will last as long as it takes the wife to find a cottonmouth on the bank.

Ya'll need to swim in a rice canal right where the water comes out of the pump.Water comes from 300 feet deep, crystal clear and WAY colder than 82 degrees!

How much are these pools that are pictures above? I imagine $30-$50k will get you a basic pool that looks nothing like this. Though I may be wrong as I know nothing about the subject....
