Can you guys tell me why neighborhoods have no fishing signs at the neighborhood ponds? I noticed the pond down the street just got a no fishing sign after 4 years or so without one. Another area pond I go to has had one for awhile. Is it an insurance thing? I live in Pflugerville fwiw. Thanks.

To keep riffraff that doesn't live in the neighborhood away

Yuppies. They hate fishing. You should be playing golf or riding a bike or something.

Is it the HOAs that decide there should be no fishing? Like I said, my neighborhood pond did not have a sign for my first 4 years here, and now there is one. Am I going to have to go to one of these stupid meetings to find out? Some neighborhoods stock their ponds and encourage fishing, just trying to figure out why others say no fishing.

Sometimes the MUD puts up signs for insurance reasons. It depends on who owns it. If it's basically owned by the HOA you can tell them to eff off and fish anyway since your dues pay for the amenity. Even if the MUD puts up signs they don't really have the power to stop you from fishing.

Do the signs reference a a governmental entity? Because it's one thing to keep non-residents out but quite another to prevent residents from using amenities they pay for.

As a kid and teen I fished a LOT of places with those signs. Once busted, it required being stealthier and driving there before sunrise and leaving at off hours, or driving offroad to hide the truck. Good times. F--- their signs. Fishing never hurt anyone.

Same reason you might not want to fish golf course waters unless they are fast flowing or large lakes? Might be heavy on the pesticides and herbicides.

Bump for Johnny.

BrazosDog- I took the OP to mean that these weren't ponds tucked away on private property but rather neighborhood ponds in a master-planned community. The kind where the ads always show happy families fishing or walking or biking around the ponds. Maybe feeding ducks or something.

The real question is who owns them and who put up the signs. If it's the HOA I'd tell them to stick it because my HOA dues paid for their damn signs and maintaining the ponds. If it's the MUD, I'd find out more but MUD Boards are elected bodies and you can bet I'd raise hell with those people.

I'm actually working with our HOA and the 3 MUDs in our neighborhood to better manage the community lakes. I'm friendly with a couple TxPWD biologists who live here and they're assisting.

Basically we're getting them to stop dying the ponds, plant native aquatic vegetation & stock filter-feeder baitfish to keep the water clear, add some structure, and stock more baitfish with a few top-end predators to knock down the population of undersized bluegill.

C&R fishing makes such a point moot.

Good point Finn. That makes a little more sense.

Most time I see these signs posted, they are ponds on private property that are managed by an HOA or commercial property association. They don't want outsiders who don't pay fees using their amenities.
The biggest issue though is that some urban pond fisherman will show up to a catch and release pond with a bucket. They drink beer and smoke cigarettes and leave butts, mono fishing line, and litter all over the place. It only takes one bad apple...

My neighborhood has 2 ponds with no fishing signs. I was told by the HOA rep that the fishing lines can/have caused damage to the fountain pumps. Likely a BS answer! but certainly plausible.

Nope. This is exactly why. (And to keep riff raff out).

Finn nailed exactly what I am talking about. I just want to wet a line and certainly do not want to eat anything out of these ponds. I take my 13 year old and a neighbor boy sometimes to get them off their phones and iPads. I do see that people leave litter and I understand the riff raff thing, but that's not me. Oh well, I guess I'll just keep fishing until someone runs me off which hasn't happened yet. Thanks for the replies fellas.
