I know the board likes thermocell, is there a preference as to which device from them everyone uses? Any other favorites? Kids are getting eaten up in the backyard already. .

I've only had experience with XMosquito, but there are others out there.

They come in and install lines around your yard and nozzles in the bushes. It sprays at dusk and dawn when they are most active. There is also a remote so you can cycle it anytime you want (like if you were about to have people over). Its safe for pets/kids and doesnt bind to the soil.

There is one catch, misting systems are pricey. Depending on yard size, they can run from $1200-$5000.
The biggest advantage they have is that they only kill whats in your yard. All of the other traps use CO2 and heat to draw them in. So you end up drawing in mosquitoes from other people's yards.

In regards to misting systems, how does it work if there is a garden?

Seems it would be in anything edible, is it safe to ingest?

The problem is not ingesting insecticides. The problem is pollination. Misting systems kill ALL insects including bees which are important for gardens and pollination. I could not find any info but my thoughts are it would not be a good thing to have.

BTW, I spent a few years in the pest control business.

it really depends on what you are using Pyrethrum insecticides are pretty safe. They have been used for a long time and are approved for use on produce destined for human consumption. The key is to obviously wash well before eating. Natural pyrethrum insecticides are bio degradable and water soluble. They dont hang around in soil and water like permethrin does.

As far as beneficial insects go, yes a misting system might kill them. But most systems on the market use a targeted approach meaning they only spray at dusk and dawn. Dusk and dawn are when mosquitoes and other biting insects are most active. Bees typically aren't active at that time so the risk of killing them off is greatly reduces

TX AG 88,

I am in East Texas (Tyler). I have no idea what product the guys spray over the yard. All I know is it freaking works!!!

Lone Star Pest control is the name of the company. They drive around in trucks that say "the mosquito man" on them.

They said we would notice the skeeters coming back the 3rd week before they sprayed again, but I've never noticed it. We eat outside regularly and I never see them. It's quite the stark contrast to before when we were bombarded by them. I hated going into the backyard because we have a water feature and a pool, so they were always around.

I considered a mister, but thought I'd try this first. No need to spend the $ in my mind...

We have a misting system and so do others I know. We all use Pyrethrum. It is safe.
