In my experience, your much more likely to get stung by a yellow jacket. Red wasps (paper wasps) tend to leave you alone unless their nest is disturbed. Yellow jackets are more aggressive. I'm allergic to them so they all hurt the same.

Pain level is a push, but if you get hit once by a yellow jacket, you probably got hit 17 times.

Both

But I am allergic. By allergic it hurts and swells up a little. Therefore I wage straight up chemical warfare and dual wield 25 ft spray cans.

Paper wasps. Period. Accidentally grabbed a nest full of the big ass black and yellow/orange ones under a pool slide once. Remember it vividly.

Get stung on the back of the hand (seems to account for most of my stings), and about an hour later looks like a broke a bone in my hand. Not a fan.

Though I'll take that over an asp again. I ended up with arm and chest pain with that one.

Never been stung by a wasp. Did have a bee sting me in the neck as I walked to my dad's car after a soccer when I was a kid.

That surprised me and really hurt.

From my experience: scorpion> ground hornet> red ant> bumble bee> wasp> yellow jacket> fire ant> brown recluse (bite alone....pain 6 hours later trumps them all). No other experience to speak of.

Red wasp for sure.

One thing I know that will make the pain a little easier to deal with is tobacco.

Tear up a cigarette or take pinch of snuff and wet it with a little water and hold it tight to the sting. I swear it makes a huge difference.

Bumble bee left a huge bruise on the top of my foot. I was about 23 at the time and that crap hurt!

I've been stung by red wasps and yellow jackets and they weren't as bad.

My dad always told me to just be still and the wasp(yellow jacket)would leave me alone. I told him they always seemed to land on or about my neck/face/head. This went on for a couple of decades or more.

Then one day we were sitting on the front porch of an elevated bay house with the breeze blowing away from the porch. Then I spotted the yellow jacket leaving a tree about 40 ft away. He started flying in our direction. I told my Dad "watch this, he's coming". I sat motionless. That little SOB flew a path straight toward us, turned an landed on my ear. I swatted him away as he landed avoiding a sting. I asked Dad what he thought, and he said...

"Don't sit next to me."

Agreed Bumble bee is worse. In middle school there was a bee that flew into our class. Not thinking I swatted it with my hand, which ended up into me catching it. Bad call. Pulle out the stinger out of my palm, it swelled up and hurt like crazy for the rest of the day. On the bright side I didn't have to do any work for the rest of the day

OnlyforNow, when I got popped by the asp, I didn't see it on the passenger arm rest of the truck. I pressed my forearm into it fully enough I smashed it, and got it stuck to my arm. Initially I scraped it off and didn't think much of it. Five minutes later it was literally getting hard to breath, from pain. As we pulled into the ER, the reaction disappeared about as fast as it came on.

For me it is asp> bumblebee> velvet ant> red wasp> scorpion> red ant> yellow jacket/paper wasp> Africanized honeybee (more so because they seem to enjoy going for your head and are pretty successful)> honeybee (accidental crushing)> fire ant. The asp will never be equaled unless I get hit by a Portuguese man-o-war...accidentally sat full on one with the back of my thigh as a 4 year old...I cried for over 2 hours straight. I Hate those things. Damn, guess I suck at avoiding being stung, huh? And that doesn't even factor in being skewered by freshwater catfish and hardhead fins.

Yellow jackets have always hurt me worse.

Red wasps are uncomfortable/painful, but a g-d yellow jacket feels like it has red hot stingers that act like mini cluster bombs that carpet bomb the area around ground zero. Effing hurts.

I have only been stung once by a bumblebee. It was when i was about 9, and the effer got me on the left nipple. It felt like what i can only imagone a pair of vice grips slathered in icy hot and then heated to red hot clamped on a nipple would feel like.

Red wasp > yellow jacket

I got stung right in my eye brow by a red 2yrs ago and it was by far the worst. I think ground hornets are even with red wasp too them SOB's hurt when they tag you on the ear.

Growing up we encountered what appeared to be 2 different kinds of yellow jackets: the smaller ones, maybe 1" in length with smaller tail ends we called "city's" and the bigger ones >1" who had a much larger tail end we called "country's" I probably should know the difference but that's still how I refer to them.

Been stung by more than I can remember "city" yellow jackets and they don't bother me at all but I can't remember being stung by a "country" yellow jacket though either.

Urs, I was feeding my dogs at night and brushed up against one with my arm, sorta smashed him against the chain link fence.

Felt it immediately. Had to take 3 Benadryl and really watched it closely. Got a huge welt from it that lasted over a week.

At the tender age of 5, I took my Riflemans cap rifle and nudged a large nest of yellow jackets just to see what would happen. Hilarity ensued.

Hammer Stump,

At our deer lease we got "both" much like you mentioned.

The traditional yellow jacket much like around the house in the suburbs. And the yellow/orange and black larger version. From what I've seen the true city yellows make nests usually higher and under eves and sometimes in the smaller trees. The "country" yellow/orange and black ones will make them closer to the ground, in brush around 2-3 ft tall, with smaller nests.

We were clearing the tall weeds and small brush around our camp in prep for season this last year on a morning that had had off and on heavy rains with heavy cloud cover in between. I reached down to pull a 4 ft "weed" thing by the roots and heard the BIG buzz in my ear and instantly ran. Upon further inspection there was a "small" nest of about 15 of those yellow/orange ones that had been about 4 inches from my ear. The only reason we could figure I did not get lit up like the end of Ace Frehley's guitar was because of the impeding rain. Those were some mean azz lookin' wasps, that died with petrol.

Hard to say for me because my experiences with red wasps have been single, isolated events. With yellow jackets, it was a swarm...and it. sucked.

Ive been stung and bitten by seemingly everything there is (minus poisonous snake), but my experience with a hardhead catfish spine was excruciating... wondering where it falls in yalls ranking.

I got hit by 4 red wasps at the same time last year when I stuck my hand into a bush to trim it and I swear it felt like I stuck it into an electrical socket. They chased me about 20 feet and my hand looked like it got hit by a baseball bat about 10 times for a day.

Sting for Sting, red wasp wins. The problem is that you usually get hit several times by yellowjackets if you get hit once.

I agree a bumblebee outdoes them both.

Assassin bugs also pack a fair punch.

Asp is friggin misery.
