My parents have lived in the same house on the lake since 1992. This is the largest amount of dead fish at one time we have seen. My mom said they had about 40 dead white bass around their boat slip this morning. Here is an email from SJRA.

Good Afternoon,

Below is a response that we received from Texas Parks and wildlife concerning the dead fish on Lake Conroe:

There is an ongoing fish kill at Lake Conroe involving primarily Yellow Bass and White Bass. Fish kills effecting these species are fairly common in the spring when these fish are crowded together. There are a number of fish diseases that may be to blame and it is often difficult to determine exactly what the pathogen is causing the kill. Typically these kills last a few days to a couple of weeks then end. Steven Mitchell from TPWD's Spills and Kills Team is planning to visit the lake tomorrow to see if he can gather some samples of fish that are sick but still alive to try to culture the pathogen and to determine the extent of the kill. Again we believe this is a natural occurrence and not any introduction of toxic substances based on the type kill and the species involved. Unfortunately even if we can identify the disease there is no treatment for fish kills of this type. We just have to let them run their course.

Thanks!!

I'm sure this turns out to be nothing, but this is the largest number we've seen dead in 22 years on the lake.

Weird. Of course, it is spring bug and weed season, and some of the chemicals used to treat lawns are DEADLY to fish. If they're pushed up against the bulkheads pursuing shad, and some chemical runoff is highly concentrated there....it can get a lot of them, but if it is over a large area, that's extremely unlikely.

A kid in lab yesterday told me they saw a bunch of dead fish on Conroe this past Sunday. Not sure where though.

I probably saw 100-150 dead white bass along the bulkheads during my 5 mile paddle yesterday while fishing the Atkins Creek arm from my kayak.

It seemed like the vast majority were small, 8 to 10 inches or so. I wonder if whatever the issue is is disproportionately affecting the juveniles or males.

Duman and I saw a bunch on Monday while fishing. Commented on it quite a bit

There are hardly any chemicals a person without a chemical license can get that are toxic to fish. You can blame it on a lot of things but not that.

Permethrin is widely available, used, and toxic to fish.

The fact that it is two closely related species over a large area indicates disease.
