MouthBQ,

I know what you mean about making your boat feel small.

I had a 18' Majek RFL built to spec in Jan '95 with a deck in the back above floor level. It had "extras" like a SS steering wheel, no feedback steering, gator mount MG troll motor, jack plate, vhf radio, lighted compass, removable seat posts and seats for drift fishing, a 115 hp motor not requiring pre-mix, and....was two tone grey/white. While they did have 21 footers, they were not the "norm". When I backed into the slip that boat drew a crowd. Folks in the POC/Seadrift area thought it was REALLY nice. I got a special deal on it. For real. It was a 18K boat, that I got new for 14K.

Now, that boat would get scoffed at, and some of the folks on the same water would have thought the LOLpoors were at the dock. A guy I work with (good guy too) was making the case to justify a 70K boat to fish the same kind of water.

My Dad liked my boat, but fished an aluminum tunnel at the time I purchased mine. He did end up getting another one, a 16 ft Flatlander a few years later.

Well I sold my Majek due to lack of use (almost every week for the first 6, but almost none the next two) after 8 years, for just a few thousand less than paid. A few months before Dad passed earlier this year, he gave me his Flatlander. It is more than enough boat for the back bays. Not quite as "fancy" (see me laughing) as my Majek, but it gets me to the reds and trout.

Truthfully, if I could go smaller than 16ft with my son and wife, I would. I only stuck that Majek twice, and it was a biotch to get out, even at 18 ft.

With the 5 fish limit coming on trout, I can go a much shorter distance than the big fast boats, and still limit out with a lot less $$$ on gas and boat cost.

But I'll still be the little LOLpoors at the dock when the boat is on trailer compared to the others.

Pulled the trigger on this boat today at the boat show. Doesn't have any electronics on it, so I'm coming to you guys for answers!

Suggestions??

Nice. I'm behind on electronics but here's a ba-bump.

Big boats suck down fuel, but they are a more comfortable ride in normal chop. When the chop starts rolling, my little boat is actually better because I can maneuver between the waves. They of course have huge capacity and can take more people places. Size does help in many respects.

On the other hand, being small and having a low draft can get you places, too, and for much less money. With a big enough 4x4, I can also improvise launching spots instead of having to use a ramp with a light boat and trailer, so long as the bottom is sand or shell.

Maneuvering between the waves probably uses as much gas as a bigger boat who just goes through them.

You're throttling up and down and turning this way an that, versus a straight line and sustained speed. Gonna be a wash

No, I can literally fit between them and pace them. They move fairly fast at that size. The only problem is when you have to go at them or quarter them. That gets exciting. I've been out in seas that were taller than my head stand up in my skiff. As long as it isn't breaking, it's all good.

Like I said earlier, I had a 18 ft Majek. Great boat, especially with a 115 pushing it. As Dad joked, "it would get up on concrete, if you could afford the props". Only stuck it twice and it was a real biotch to get out.

Another drawback was that at 18 ft, it seemed to short to span the waves and almost too long to drop an quarter.

I am finding the 16 ft Flatlander Dad left me to quarter much better. I hope I never have to find out (but most likely will) how much easier to push/pull out the Flatlander will be. 2 ft shorter, less console/gas tank, and an inline 90 hp vs the full size powerhead of a 115.

I am one of those hardheaded folks that will find somewhere no one else, except for scooters, will want to go. Especially since we are probably headed for a 5 trout limit in the POC/Seadrift area. And, yes, if I can run shorter distances in mainly protected water that is one heck of a cheaper gas bill.

If I sell the Flatlander, it will be for a 14.5 Shoalwater mini cat, or a 15' Shallow sport. And the 90 HP Yammy 2stroke comes with me.

My texags is broke. I keep getting error messages when I post, that make me DP.

Apologies.

WTF is going on staff? Ideas?

Check out the masters series by Sportsman. They are a good family boat and a real value compared to most.

My Gulfcoast with a jack plate has served me really well. It's a great bayboat.
